Latvia is set to reintroduce compulsory military service amid growing tensions with neighbouring Russia and the war in Ukraine. The Baltic country currently has only 7,500 active soldiers and national guardsmen, supported by 1,500 NATO troops. The new mandate will apply only to men and will be gradually reinstated from 2023, officials say. "The current military system in Latvia has reached its limits," defence minister Artis Pabriks told reporters on Tuesday. "At the same time, we have no reason to believe that Russia will change its behaviour," he added. PETERSON: Russia Vs. Ukraine Or Civil War In The West? | The Daily Wire
We are now several months into the conflict with Russia. I say “we” because we are all pretending here in the West that the real war is between Russia and Ukraine but (nod nod wink wink) if we clandestinely, in some sense, provide full support to Ukraine then maybe the Russians, foolish and backward as they are won’t notice and we can simultaneously pretend that we aren’t flirting with the prospect of a long, arduous and inconceivably destructive war. I think that the collusion of the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church is even more unforgivable. Be that as it may, I also believe that the attempt to deeply understand the motive forces for this war, as it is very difficult to set things right (let alone avoid a similar future catastrophe—or even to stop this conflict from spreading) in the … [Read more...] about PETERSON: Russia Vs. When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?

With less than a week until Euro 2022 gets under way , Chelsea manager Emma Hayes joins Telegraph Sport as a columnist - and in her first piece she analyses the key areas in England's tilt at the trophy. Psychological challenge of being hosts With sold-out stadiums for games like the opener at Old Trafford – a new experience for the women’s game in this country - these England players are going to have to support each other more than ever before. If England go one or two goals down after 15 minutes against a team like Germany, is the environment prepared for the reaction of a packed quarter-final crowd suddenly falling silent? That’s not an experience we normally have in women’s football. A noisy crowd will be an unbelievable ride when things are going well but, as a manager, I want to see the team's togetherness - digging themselves out of tough situations to win a tournament. Under Sarina Wiegman, England haven’t suffered much yet. They had the easiest World Cup … [Read more...] about Secret weapons and sell-out crowds: What England need to do to win the Euros
