Renault deserves its place among automotive trendsetters. Its 5 was the first real supermini, before that the 16 had brought alive the practicality of the hatchback, although some of us, mainly because we owned one rather than because it’s a defining truth, reckon the Austin A40 Countryman from the 50s was the first of the type. In reality, its split tailgate consigns it among the also-rans of automotive history, and the 16 also had a acrobatic back seat long before the Honda Jazz drew praise for such a feature. Fast forward to the 80s; the Renault Espace started the whole MPV thing in Europe just as Chrylser launched its minivans in the States. What set the Espace apart was its futuristic shape, designed by Matra with plastic panels round a galvanised frame and adopted by Renault. It’s all about vision. Renault has been equally as quick adopting electric technology and has been in enthusiastic partnership with Nissan and others for many years. With all this background in … [Read more...] about Trendsetter Renault shows belated SUV brilliance

Q: I want a new car with automatic transmission. I have roughly €30k to spend including selling my car - a Toyota Avensis 131. I do 35,000km a year, mostly on motorway. I have looked at so many car reviews I can't decide. I like the Honda Civic auto diesel. Or what about the Toyota Corolla hybrid? Gillian: Yes to both. The Corolla automatic is a 1.8 hybrid and ranges from €26,370 for the base spec Aura to €32,290 for the highest spec Luna Sport, but for €30k I would suggest you opt for the Sol model. If you want more room and go for a Toyota, then there is a 4d saloon option and for budget you will get a Luna Sport model. The Civic you should opt for is the 1.6 dsl and again, it comes as a hatchback or saloon and automatics start at €27,895. Both have been in competition for many years and both have been updated recently. My money would be on the Honda but only marginally. Eddie: Same here, Gillian, though strategically the hybrid is the better option … [Read more...] about Advice desk: Automatic; friendly deal; small petrol; three SUVs
James Bond has appeared behind the wheel of many vehicles: from a Lotus Esprit that turned into a submarine to a rather less glamorous Ford Mondeo. But Aston Martin is the carmaker most closely associated with the fictional spy, and it is hoping its new SUV can cause as much of a stir as 007’s sleek sports cars. The first DBX will leave the production line at Aston Martin Lagonda’s new factory in St Athan, south Wales, in the first half of 2020, in a major departure for the British manufacturer as it tries to rapidly double its annual production numbers. The DBX, the brand’s first sports utility vehicle in its 106-year history, is part of a strategy by the chief executive, Andy Palmer, to bring the carmaker into the modern era and broaden its appeal beyond its mainly male sports car clientele. Speaking at the factory, which is already producing test vehicles, Palmer said Aston Martin was targeting the tens of thousands of multimillionaire women in countries such as … [Read more...] about Aston Martin opens new factory in south Wales to build SUV
Honda Motor Co said on Wednesday it is recalling 137,000 new sport utility vehicles (SUVs) following reports of three injuries tied to sudden air bag deployments in the United States, Trend reported citing Reuters. The Japanese-based automaker said it is recalling the 2019 CR-V to replace steering wheel wire harnesses and supplemental restraint system cable reels after six unexpected driver air bag deployments that occurred without a crash. There are so far no reports of related crashes, the automaker said. The recall includes 118,000 vehicles in the United States and 19,000 in Korea and Canada. Metal burrs on the interior surface of the steering wheel may result in damage that could lead to a short circuit and overheating of components, Honda said. The issue is separate from a series of recalls Honda has conducted over the last decade to replace more than 21 million defective Takata air bag inflators in about 12.9 million U.S. vehicles that Honda has said are responsible for 14 U.S. … [Read more...] about Honda recalls 137,000 SUVs for sudden air bag deployments
