Jo Johnson is nervous. His hands tremble slightly as we pull out chairs to sit down under the awning of a street café in Orpington. This Johnson rarely thrusts himself into the spotlight so given he’s dominated the weekend news the nervousness is understandable. This is the shy, considered brother, the brainy one you’ll hear described in Westminster as “diligent”, “honest” and “decent”. But the ripple effect of his resignation as Transport Minister on Friday over what he describes today as “the con” of Theresa May’s Brexit deal — a “fake Brexit”, “a rout”, “a calculated deceit of the British people” — could mean it’s this quiet Johnson that halts the march out of Europe with an “emperor has no clothes” deal. He has called for another referendum, a People’s Vote. And because Jo Johnson couldn’t look less like a pig in shit with … [Read more...] about Jo Johnson on May’s Brexit plans: The mood is shifting against the PM

THERESA MAY’s Brexit hopes were in turmoil last night Boris’ brother Jo Johnson quit the Government – and demanded a second Referendum. The furious Rail Minister vowed to vote against the PM’s proposed Brexit agreement – saying it was worse than No Deal, would cede control to Brussels and leave the UK in a “never ending purgatory”. The rail minister said the deal was "substantially worse" than staying in the EU, and it was "imperative we go back to the people and check" they still want to leave. Within moments Boris backed his brother’s “boundless admiration” and said the PM’s deal was a “surrender of control”. Jo Johnson – who voted Remain in 2016 - said: “What is now being proposed won’t be anything like what was promised two years ago. “Britain stands on the brink of the greatest crisis since the Second World War. I believe it is entirely right to go back to the people and ask them … [Read more...] about Minister Jo Johnson QUITS over Brexit and demands a second referendum
Jo Johnson has resigned from Theresa May's government, criticised the Brexit agreement as a 'terrible mistake' and backed calls for another referendum. Mr Johnson, who is the brother of Boris Johnson, quit as transport minister and minister for London in order to vote against the Brexit deal when it comes to parliament. In his resignation statement he says a no-deal Brexit 'will inflict untold damage on our nation' and says the result of the negotiations has been 'a failure of British statecraft on a scale unseen since the Suez crisis'. The senior Tory, who campaigned for Remain, follows his Leave-supporting brother Boris Johnson out of Mrs May's government. The former foreign secretary quit in July in protest at Mrs May's handling of Brexit. In a blog explaining his decision, Jo Johnson said: "It has become increasingly clear to me that the withdrawal agreement, which is being finalised in Brussels and Whitehall even as I write, will be a terrible mistake. "Indeed, the choice being … [Read more...] about Jo Johnson quits government with spectacular blast at Brexit
LONDON — U.K. Transport Minister Jo Johnson resigned today over Theresa May’s “incoherent” Brexit strategy. Johnson, brother of former foreign secretary and Brexiteer figurehead Boris, issued a statement describing the Brexit withdrawal agreement — which he said is being “finalized in Brussels and Whitehall even as I write” — as a “terrible mistake.” “The choice being presented to the British people is no choice at all,” he wrote, calling for May’s deal to be put to the people in a referendum, with the option of remaining in the EU. A second referendum “would not be about re-running the 2016 referendum,” he said, “but about asking people whether they want to go ahead with Brexit now that we know the deal that is actually available to us, whether we should leave without any deal at all or whether people on balance would rather stick with the deal we already have inside the European Union. … [Read more...] about Jo Johnson, brother of Boris, resigns over Brexit
