To hold his Senate seat against his challenger, Beto O’Rourke, in 2018, Ted Cruz spent nearly $40 million. O’Rourke’s campaign spent double that amount. The day before the vote in Texas, Cruz lent his campaign $260,000. This was a curious—and seemingly unnecessary—gesture: The campaign’s final report showed it ended with $263,000 cash in hand. Yet Cruz was not acting irrationally. He was preparing the ground for a challenge of his own, an assault on the tottering remains of the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance law of 2002. That law, more formally known as the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, or BCRA, limited how campaigns could repay loans from candidates. A campaign has 20 days in which it can repay such loans in full. After that deadline, it can repay no more than $250,000. When Cruz’s campaign finished repaying him, the deadline had elapsed. So his campaign committee settled only $250,000 of the loan, leaving $10,000 outstanding—which Cruz then sued in federal court to … [Read more...] about What Ted Cruz’s Supreme Court Win Means

Marjorie Taylor Greene accuses Biden official of leaking SCOTUS murder plot
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested Wednesday that news organizations were able to obtain a new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report on potential threats to Supreme Court Justices following the leak of a draft opinion on abortion because White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is "sleeping" with a CNN correspondent. "HOW does the press know about this terrorist plot to burn down the Supreme Court and murder Justices? And Members of Congress do not know. Is it because Biden's new @PressSec is sleeping with a CNN National Corespondent?" the Republican Georgia lawmaker tweeted Wednesday. The DHS memo, which was dated May 13 and first reported by Axios on Wednesday, has gained traction among major news sites such as CNN. The department warned that because of the national abortion debate, both the public and SCOTUS members could see a boost in threats, such as burning down the Supreme Court and murdering the justices. "We assess that the … [Read more...] about Marjorie Taylor Greene accuses Biden official of leaking SCOTUS murder plot
Court rejects challenge of Pennsylvania’s post-Election Day deadline in blow to Trump’s legal disputes
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit has upheld a lower court's rejection of a constitutional challenge to Pennsylvania's post-Election Day deadline—further adding to President Donald Trump 's losses in recent legal disputes challenging the results of the election. In the decision, the panel of judges stated that the plaintiffs who brought the case—four registered voters from Somerset County, Pennsylvania—lacked standing and upheld the district judge's decision to deny last-minute injunctive relief just before Election Day on the grounds that it would confuse voters and disturb "the settled expectations of voters and election officials." "Even were we to conclude that Plaintiffs have standing, we could not say that the District Court abused its discretion in concluding on this record that the Supreme Court's election law jurisprudence counseled against injunctive relief," the court documents said. "Plaintiffs' requested relief would have upended this status quo, which … [Read more...] about Court rejects challenge of Pennsylvania’s post-Election Day deadline in blow to Trump’s legal disputes
‘Black eyes flashing’: Lynette Dawson spoke of Chris’ rage, sister says
Australian woman Lynette Dawson told her sister in the weeks before she vanished that her husband Chris was always angry with her and he left a note in their home saying “don’t paint too dark a picture of me to the girls”, a court has heard. Chris Dawson, 73, has pleaded not guilty in the New South Wales Supreme Court to murdering his wife , who vanished from her home at Bayview, on Sydney’s northern beaches, in January 1982. Continuing her evidence on Tuesday, Patricia Jenkins said she spoke to her younger sister Lynette one or two days before Christmas Day 1981, after finding out from their mother that “Chris had left”. It is not disputed by the defence that Dawson and JC, the couple’s babysitter and a former student of the high school teacher, had travelled to Queensland before Christmas “with a view to starting a new life”, but returned a short time later. GUJRANWALA: PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said that PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is "rejoicing while sitting at the Centre" while the nation is abusing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Addressing a jalsa in Gujranwala, Khan said: "Zardari is present at the Centre, ruling Sindh, making money while the people are abusing PM Shehbaz and PML-N." Berating the Sharif brothers, the PTI chairman said: "Shehbaz is asking what to do after becoming the prime minister. He said that inflation is rising and foreign exchange is tumbling. The two brothers (Shehbaz and Nawaz Sharif) are now trapped and they are wondering what to do." He said that PM Shehbaz thought he would save himself from the Federal Investigation Bureau (FIA) after becoming the prime minister and warned the PM that he will recover all the money from him and send him to jail. San Francisco mayor asks for brother’s early release from prison, ethics of request called into question
San Francisco Mayor London Breed is being accused of ethical violations following a request to outgoing California governor Jerry Brown. NBC Bay Area first reported the news, airing a segment detailing Breed's request for her brother, Napoleon Brown, to be given a reduced prison sentence. Brown is currently serving 42 years for manslaughter for the death of Lenties White, armed robbery and other crimes, in addition to two years tacked onto the initial sentence after being found with heroin on his person while incarcerated. The additional time was added in 2017. In the letter, sent to Jerry Brown in late October, Breed states that she is not requesting that her brother's sentence be pardoned, but reduced. "I am not asking for my brother to be pardoned or for his conviction to be wiped away, but simply for the Governor to consider initiating the commutation of his sentence. This would only be the first step in a long process that involves a thorough investigation by the Parole … [Read more...] about San Francisco mayor asks for brother’s early release from prison, ethics of request called into question
