On a cold February evening, weeks before the full force of the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States, a few dozen Mike Bloomberg supporters milled around the airy living room of a home in the genteel Washington, D.C., suburb of McLean, Virginia. The voters, most of them white, described themselves as moderates or former Republicans. They explained to me that, more than anything, they want stability and civility back in national politics, and they tut-tutted any mention of Bernie Sanders and his plans for radical change. But one issue—the one they’d come to hear about—got them really riled up: gun control. “He’s laid out an assault-weapons ban for new purchases,” a man named Bill, a managing partner at a small investment firm and a former intelligence officer, told me excitedly, when I asked why he backed Bloomberg for president. (Bill declined to give his last name for privacy reasons.) “And there absolutely should be universal background checks,” he continued. “It’s like, … [Read more...] about Democrats’ Unprecedented Embrace of Gun Control

Network Rail boss lined up to lead ‘Fat Controller’ rail shake-up
The boss of Network Rail is being primed to lead an all-powerful “Fat Controller” body in the biggest shake-up of Britain’s train network since the Nineties. Andrew Haines, former boss of the Civil Aviation Authority, has been asked by the Department for Transport to begin reviewing the train lines as if he had already been awarded control of a railways “guiding mind” body, according to a letter seen by The Sunday Telegraph . The body is one of two major reforms proposed by an as yet unpublished “root and branch” review. The other is the abolition of rail franchising . A letter from Ruth Hannant and Polly Payne, joint DfT directors general for rail, asks Mr Haines to conduct an analysis of one of Britain’s most troubled train lines, the east coast network that was most recently run by Virgin and Stagecoach. “We would like to make clear that the review should be undertaken from the perspective of a neutral single guiding mind, not in your capacity as CEO of NR,” it … [Read more...] about Network Rail boss lined up to lead ‘Fat Controller’ rail shake-up
American influencer’s ‘mind blown’ after hearing Scouse accent for the first time
We often hear Americans gushing over how much they love a British accent, but they often don't realise that not everyone here sounds the same. Depending on where you live, there are different regional dialects that will impact how you sound - be it Geordie or Brummie. But one woman from the US has had the internet in stitches after hearing a Scouse accent for the very first time, reports the Liverpool Echo. Beauty influencer and make-up artist Mikayla Nogueira from Massachusetts has a following of over 12 million people on TikTok and often tests out products recommended to her. She was recently mentioned in a video by a fellow make-up lover named Melissa, who had a strong Liverpool accent. Warning, the video below contains explicit language. Sunak faces spending review ‘litmus test’ to level up a Covid-ravaged UK
“The reality is that we’re on course to be levelled down by Covid,” says Sheffield City Region metro mayor Dan Jarvis after months of the virus tearing through the North of England. Like even the best-laid plans, “levelling up” the country has slipped down the agenda during the pandemic but Jarvis is worried the North is falling further behind. He sees the Chancellor’s spending review this week as a “litmus test” of the Government’s commitment to closing Britain’s huge regional inequalities. “Investment in infrastructure is an absolutely critical part of our economic response to Covid and what we need the Government to do is make good on previous statements,” he says. Jarvis is not alone in his concern about the project stalling. The Northern Research Group, a new caucus of more than 50 “blue wall” Tory MPs, has been described as Boris Johnson’s biggest threat after firing a shot across the bow of the PM with a letter urging action last month . MPs and metro mayors will be … [Read more...] about Sunak faces spending review ‘litmus test’ to level up a Covid-ravaged UK
Conspiracy theories during coronavirus pandemic in Europe
Shutdowns, travel restrictions, closed schools — the coronavirus pandemic has dramatically changed daily life for people across Europe. And there may be unforeseen longer-term consequences as conspiracy theories are spreading and trust in the political system is dwindling. That's according to a new study by the German Amadeu Antonio Foundation, the British Hope Charitable Trust and the Swedish Expo Foundation that surveyed 12,000 people in eight countries about their political attitudes. Mounting prejudice A majority of the respondents in France, Italy, Poland and Hungary believe that the political system in their country is completely or partially broken. In Germany and Sweden, as many as one-third of the people share this view. Prejudices against immigrants, Muslims and other marginalized groups are all on the rise. In all the countries surveyed, around one-third of respondents have a negative opinion of immigrants. In Hungary, the figure is 60%. “Petty and childish”: Man dragged for intervening in wife’s job interviews
Members of a popular internet forum offered stern advice to one woman who said her husband has ruined every job interview she's had over the last five months. In a viral Reddit post published on r/AmITheA**hole, Redditor u/the54756 (otherwise referred to as the original poster, or OP) said she has been diligently looking for a new job but detailed the questionable manner in which her partner has made finding one nearly impossible. Titled, "[Am I the a**hole] for locking the door to prevent my husband from getting involved in my job interview?" the post has received nearly 11,000 votes and 1,400 comments in the last seven hours. Beginning with the explanation that her husband works a "high-paying" job and has repeatedly encouraged her to simply stay at home, the original poster said she refused his offer and embarked on a months-long job search. However, after securing multiple interviews with multiple different employers, the original poster said she remains jobless and … [Read more...] about “Petty and childish”: Man dragged for intervening in wife’s job interviews
