Champions League: Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla on opposite trajectories

· January 8, 2021 ·

Three weeks is a long time in football. Before their Champions League last-16 first leg against Borussia Dortmund on February 17 , Sevilla were riding the crest of a wave with nine straight wins and seven clean sheets in a row. Since then, they've lost three of their last four games and fallen out of the La Liga title race. Dortmund, meanwhile, appear to have turned a corner. Marco Rose has been announced as their next coach and, with the exception of last weekend's 4-2 defeat in Munich , the team are on the rise again. The turning point for both teams was that fraught night in Andalusia. But not so fast. Dortmund have failed to get beyond the last-16 of the Champions League since 2017, when they lost to Monaco under the shadow of the terrorist attack on their team bus . Last season, they beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the first leg, only to let it slip in the second. Interim Dortmund coach Edin Terzic is keen to avoid a repeat and knows that a big performance is … [Read more...] about Champions League: Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla on opposite trajectories

Ainsley Maitland-Niles reveals he quit Arsenal in January loan transfer to stop ‘rotting away’ on bench under Arteta

· March 8, 2021 ·

AINSLEY MAITLAND-NILES has revealed that he joined West Bromwich Albion in January to avoid 'rotting away' on Arsenal's bench. The versatile star featured prominently in the Gunners' run to FA Cup success last season, while also earning his first England caps in the autumn. But he subsequently struggled for game time in the Premier League this term, being handed only five starts by Mikel Arteta prior to his January move. Since joining West Brom, Maitland-Niles has embraced the challenge of trying to stay in the Premier League. The 23-year-old told talkSPORT : "It's another loan deal, you are going to end up going back to the club eventually. "It was just more of a chance for me to show what I'm capable of other than sitting on the bench for the rest of the season and rotting away. "The main reason was being able to play as there's nothing better than playing. "I felt it would be great to experience the work of people trying to save their careers and stay … [Read more...] about Ainsley Maitland-Niles reveals he quit Arsenal in January loan transfer to stop ‘rotting away’ on bench under Arteta

Afghan women risk losing their rights in a new political setup

· January 8, 2021 ·

For nearly two decades, women in Afghanistan have played an active part in social and political life by holding political office, working in professions and running businesses. Advances for women have extended from the country's elite in the cities all the way to the less-privileged communities in the provinces. However, Afghan women now fear their place in society will again be marginalized as the Islamist militant Taliban consolidate their power under a peace deal with the US. There are big questions about how the social landscape in Afghanistan will shift under Taliban influence, and what conditions will be forced upon women. Fawzia Koofi, a member of the Afghan government delegation negotiating with the Taliban, said it is difficult to determine how the Taliban have changed nearly 20 years after being removed from political power. Afghanistan, however, has turned into a different country. "When they [the Taliban] get to know the new Afghanistan and see the media, the … [Read more...] about Afghan women risk losing their rights in a new political setup
