The parliament of the Canary Islands urged its regional government last week to include a drug test when 14-year-old teenagers get their health check-up, should the parents request it. According to the non-binding motion, this could be a significant preventive measure. But do parents have the right to make their children undergo the test? Lidl has apologised after a pigeon became "caked" in a glue-like substance on the supermarket's roof and had to be put down by a vet. Shopper Jacqui Smith was leaving the store on Roker Avenue, Sunderland, on Thursday when the bird plummeted to the ground in front of her. The pigeon had its beak and wings stuck together by the substance. Despite attempts to clean the bird, vets decided there was no other option but to put the animal down. And Lidl has apologised for "any distress caused" after being flooded with complaints from shoppers on social media. Jacqui, from Hendon, claims a shop assistant had knocked the bird from the roof before she decided to try and help. She said: "It just dropped and was covered in a transparent, glunge-like glue that got all over my hand. "The pigeon was caked in it. "Goodness knows what would have happened if I had not stopped to help." In the annual Monitoring the Future survey on drug use among adolescents, federally funded researchers reported Monday that more than one in three high school seniors and nearly one in three sophomores say they vaped at least once in the past year. Nearly 21 percent of high school seniors say they vaped a nicotine product within the past 30 days, up from 11 percent a year ago – the largest one-year increase of any substance use in the survey's 43-year history. The survey of 44,482 students from 392 public and private schools was funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse and conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan.
