ROBERT KITCHIN/STUFF Climate Change Minister James Shaw announces emissions reduction plan measures. The head of the independent Climate Change Commission is urging caution by anyone planning to connect a home to the natural (fossil-fueled) gas network, despite the Government balking at setting an end date for new gas hook-ups. The commission had wanted more certainty for home builders and gas-fitters. However, Energy Minister Megan Woods said the Government was still exploring whether the pipes could be used to carry climate-friendlier gas, such as green hydrogen, to people’s homes. Climate Change Commission chairperson Rod Carr said people should think carefully before making a call on a new stove or piping in a housing development. “Let’s just wait and see ... because my understanding is that if you are going to distribute other gases through that pipe network there may be substantial changes in technology required,” he said. “The fact still remains that people … [Read more...] about Government now has a goal for greening all energy but climate boss is urging caution over natural gas

Weekend Hot Topic: The most overrated video game ever
Readers discuss the games they feel don’t deserve their good reputation, including classics such as Halo and Bloodborne. The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Gadfly and didn’t necessarily have to be about games that are considered classics, but just titles you think are undeserving of their critical acclaim. There were plenty of sacred cows being sacrificed, although in many cases people were happy to admit the game was good – it just wasn’t for them. A discouraging word Except, when you look beyond the surface, it is a pretty average third person shooter with a very basic mission structure (travel here, shoot things, travel back, repeat), a padded story which is so self-indulgent it won’t even let you skip the inane chatter between characters on the way to missions. In my opinion Rockstar seemed totally fixated on the technical side of the game they completely forgot to inject any fun into it. To be fair, they did a good job. VIRUS TODAY: Relief bill in limbo, California hits 2M cases
Here's what's happening Thursday with the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S.: THREE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY — House Republicans shot down a Democratic bid on Thursday to pass President Donald Trump’s longshot, end-of-session demand for $2,000 direct payments to most Americans before signing a long-overdue COVID-19 relief bill. The vote shifts attention to whether Trump will follow through on his implied threat to veto the bill, which would likely cause a partial government shutdown and delay the $600 direct payments that the bill does contain. — California became the first state to record 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases reaching the milestone on Christmas Eve as close to the entire state was under a strict stay-at-home order and hospitals were flooded with the largest crush of cases since the pandemic began. — Schools nationwide have scrambled to get students outdoors during the pandemic to keep them safe and stop the spread of COVID-19. Some schools in the … [Read more...] about VIRUS TODAY: Relief bill in limbo, California hits 2M cases
The Atlantic: A History
I would like to take you back to a certain time in the young life of our republic—a time that was filled with a deep sense of foreboding, a grim expectation that our national life was about to change radically, and a giddy appreciation nonetheless of the possibilities held out by the rapid advance of human knowledge. It was a time that has perhaps more than a little in common with the times we inhabit now. The year was 1857. Railroads did not yet cross the North American continent, but everyone knew that one day soon they would. The publication of Darwin's Origin of Species was two years away, but loud rumblings in the halls of science had already warned the keepers of religious faith that serious challenges lay ahead. The largest wave of immigration in the nation's history was pouring through the cities of the eastern seaboard. Though he would become President in four years, Abraham Lincoln in 1857 was no more widely known nationally than any former one-term Congressman is today. … [Read more...] about The Atlantic: A History

Want unfettered free speech? Get far-right attacks like the Buffalo shooting
On Saturday 14 May, an 18-year-old man walked into a supermarket in Buffalo and shot 13 people, killing 10 . A few days before carrying out the killings, the shooter published a 180-page manifesto on Google Docs detailing his motives, which were largely racist and antisemitic in nature. Similarly to Brenton Tarrant , who massacred 51 people and injured 40 others at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2019, the Buffalo shooter attributed the views which caused him to carry out the killings to 4chan ; an online message board-based forum where users are able to post completely anonymously and with very little in the way of oversight or restrictions. 4chan, along with similar websites like 8chan – another anonymous forum which has also been cited by mass shooters – have a reputation for attracting the absolute human detritus of the internet. Their refusal to provide oversight to their users predictably result in them becoming hotbeds of neo-Nazi rhetoric, … [Read more...] about Want unfettered free speech? U.S. rejects “reproductive health” terms in WHO coronavirus response resolution, says there’s no “international right to abortion”
The United States largely supported an international COVID-19 response resolution but took issue with the inclusion of language about sexual and reproductive health. A draft resolution on the COVID-19 response put forth during the 73rd World Health Assembly on Tuesday called on member states to engage in a number of behaviors in the context of the pandemic. Among those actions were to maintain the uninterrupted and safe services for "mother and child health and sexual and reproductive health" and provide assistance to other countries. The U.S. disassociated itself from the language in paragraphs 7.5 and 9.4 of the resolution, saying that they "do not accept references to 'sexual and reproductive health'" or language that may suggest "access to abortion is part of population and individual level health services." "There is no international right to abortion, nor is there any duty on the part of States to finance or facilitate abortion," the U.S. said. "As President [Donald] Trump … [Read more...] about U.S. rejects “reproductive health” terms in WHO coronavirus response resolution, says there’s no “international right to abortion”
Cost of living: Diesel hits new record high and petrol is not far behind, AA warns
The average price of a litre of diesel has hit a new record high, according to industry data, signalling further financial pressure on households and businesses alike amid the deteriorating cost of living crisis. Motoring group the AA said petrol costs were also now just 1p a litre shy of striking their highest ever level as it revealed the latest set of figures showing prices at levels last seen in March, before action from the chancellor to help bring down pump costs. Data from Experian Catalist showed the average diesel price at 180.29p on Sunday. That was up from the 179.9p seen on the day of the spring statement by Rishi Sunak, which cut fuel duty by 5p a litre for a year. Average pump prices reached 166.65p a litre for petrol at the weekend, just shy of the 167.3p seen on 22 March. Advertisement Another motoring group, the RAC, suggested a link between rising diesel costs and efforts to reduce supplies of Russian diesel due to Moscow's invasion … [Read more...] about Cost of living: Diesel hits new record high and petrol is not far behind, AA warns
Exclusive: Premiership chief admits salary cap could damage English hopes in Europe
Premiership Rugby chief executive Simon Massie-Taylor insists a loss of star power and a weaker English challenge in Europe are a necessary price to pay to make the league more sustainable. Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks are the Premiership’s remaining representatives in the Champions Cup and both are listed as underdogs for their respective quarter-finals against Leinster and Racing 92 this weekend. English clubs have won four of the past six tournaments but with the salary cap coming down to £5 million this season they now figure among the poorer relations in Europe. A leading agent told Telegraph Sport that even Italian outfit Treviso possess a bigger playing budget than the Premiership’s top spenders. With clubs being forced to make substantial savings with the cap coming down by £1.4m , a host of big names including Taulupe Faletau, Faf de Klerk and Lood de Jager are leaving the Premiership this summer. However, with Premiership clubs collectively losing an estimated … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Premiership chief admits salary cap could damage English hopes in Europe
‘Yellow cards for diving’: Dan Schofield replies to Telegraph readers on football-style faking in rugby
Gamesmanship has suddenly become a worrying issue in rugby. Long thought of as the preserve of footballers, rugby players are now pushing the idea of fair play to the limits. As our columnist Will Greenwood wrote last week : "In rugby, we have enjoyed looking down on football, claiming we occupy the moral high ground...Well, don’t be so sure. Rugby is on that road, and it has all come about from a very real concern around player welfare and head safety." So what can be done to make sure rugby shows the yellow card to football-style faking? We asked for your comments and our deputy rugby correspondent Daniel Schofield has responded to some of the best of them: We absolutely have to have referees leading the way in firmly reinstalling the rugby rule that only the captain can talk to (including appeal) to the referee. I don’t want to see players chirping at or remonstrating to or towards the referees. Let them run to their captain. And captains calmly address the referee at the … [Read more...] about ‘Yellow cards for diving’: Dan Schofield replies to Telegraph readers on football-style faking in rugby
