The Ludlow is a dream hotel for any discerning traveller, it caters to everyone. People travelling with pets can book a room and a doggy bowl will be provided (but BYO food and doggy bed), in-room treatments can be arranged for a massage with a view and the mini-bars are stocked with gluten-free snacks for the intolerant among us. Inside the century-old parts of the New York City Subway
New York City's vast subway system is an iconic piece of American infrastructure that moves nearly six million riders a day. But lately, it has become plagued by overcrowding, breakdowns and delays. After a series of incidents in the summer of 2017, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency and brought on board Andy Byford, an internationally recognized transit turnaround specialist. How big a problem is Byford facing? What is his plan for getting the subway back on track? Bill Whitaker reports from under the streets of New York for 60 Minutes on Sunday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m., ET and 7:00 p.m. PT on CBS. New York's century-old subway relies on antiquated equipment, including a signaling system that dates back to the early 20th century. Whitaker gets a rare, behind the scenes look at the aging equipment in action. In one station, operator Rakiya Spady showed him how she switched traffic on the tracks using a machine built in 1917. "I call it 'Old Trusty,'" Spady tells … [Read more...] about Inside the century-old parts of the New York City Subway

In a city of impressive real estate, apartments in one of New York City’s most covetable apartment building have finally gone on sale - for up to a whopping £43m ($57m). Walk this way: Osaka hits the streets of New York for US Open boost
Naomi Osaka knows how to get her US Open game face on: just go for a walk in New York City. "You walk around and hear the lovely honking and stuff. There is a lot of energy -- you come back to the hotel very angry. I feel like it's a good exercise." The Japanese star with New York roots took out her frustrations with the Big Apple's pesky pedestrians on Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Sunday, pummelling the Belarussian 6-0, 6-0. Osaka, 20, was nearly flawless, making just three unforced errors in the rout to reach the US Open round of 16 for the first time in three tries. It was her second straight win in less than three hours, after her 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of hobbled qualifier Julia Glushko in the second round. She said her laser-like focus is one of the key improvements in her game which has helped her to a first career title at Indian Wells last March. "I used to have if I would go up 3-0, then I would create this drama where I relax a lot, and then I let the person come back into the match. … [Read more...] about Walk this way: Osaka hits the streets of New York for US Open boost
Daily News cuts drive fears New York City’s becoming ‘local news desert’
‘This is about the people who live here, and they lose from this,’ an editor says after his termination. Zach Haberman, who was laid off Monday morning from the New York Daily News, acknowledged shortly after leaving the newsroom that the situation “sucks.” But the real story, he stressed, is “not about any individual.” “This is about this city. This is about this institution,” Haberman, who was the Daily News’ breaking news editor, told POLITICO. “And this is about the people who live here, and they lose from this.” The decimation of the Daily News follows a familiar storyline in a struggling industry, as a national newspaper chain — in this case, Chicago-based Tronc — announces a “restructuring” (aka layoffs) of a paper that’s already been downsized in recent years. Tronc, which just bought the Daily News in September, laid off staffers at its Chicago Tribune in March and recently sold … [Read more...] about Daily News cuts drive fears New York City’s becoming ‘local news desert’
