About two months ago, I started developing pins and needles in my left hand. It’s usually worst in the morning, when I wake up, when it’s accompanied by numbness. My doctor says it’s probably a pinched nerve in my neck, and there’s not much that can be done. It’s very unpleasant. Is there anything I could try to get rid of it? An ongoing case of pins and needles on one side would usually be due to damaged nerves – we call this peripheral neuropathy. Nerves have different functions, and it is the sensory ones that carry messages about temperature, pain and touch that would be malfunctioning if pins and needles occurs. Nerve damage can be caused by a huge range of things from diabetes to B12 deficiency, a physical injury such as an accident, and even excess alcohol intake. The past couple of months has seen the Omicron Covid-19 variant become the dominant variant across the UK, with case numbers surging in recent weeks – although more recently confirmed infections are on the decline. There has been evidence to suggest that the new strain of Covid is milder than its predecessors, as well as suggestions that it passes through the body quicker – in England, self-isolation time for a positive case is being cut to five days for fully vaccinated people, provided they test negative on days five and six. However, with every variant of Covid there remains the concern that symptoms may linger even after the virus has passed – known as ‘long Covid’. Can you still get the longer version of the disease if you have the Omicron variant – and what signs should you be aware of? Can the Omicron variant cause long Covid? Although much is still not known about the Omicron variant, experts have said that, like other strains, it could cause long … [Read more...] about Can the Omicron variant cause long Covid?
By James Cook Published 25 July 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Five European wine-producing nations are trying to block Scotland's plans for minimum alcohol pricing. France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria have said the policy is illegal, unfair and ineffective and could have a devastating impact on the wine and spirits industry. They argue that it breaches European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products. The Scottish government insisted minimum pricing was "perfectly legal". The European Commission (EC) is currently considering the Scottish government's request to be granted an exemption from trade regulations to enact the minimum price law which was approved by the Scottish Parliament last year. Of the 12 countries which have written to the Commission to express their views on the matter, only Ireland explicitly supported … [Read more...] about Minimum alcohol pricing: Five countries oppose Scottish drink plan
Denmark lifted a number of coronavirus restrictions and allowed the reopening of certain venues Sunday despite the spread of the omicron variant in the country. Cinemas, zoos, museums and theaters were among the places that could welcome visitors again. Limited numbers of spectators also were allowed to attend indoor and outdoor sports events. Visitors are required to wear masks at most of these places and provide proof that they have been vaccinated or have recovered or recently tested negative for COVID-19. The government is planning to relax coronavirus restrictions further in Denmark, a country of 5.8 million, on Jan. 31. Danish Health Minister Magnus Heunicke told reporters earlier this week that the government was monitoring the pandemic situation carefully and “wouldn’t have supported the reopening if it hadn’t been for a clear approach both from our own and from external experts.” Recommended Mälkki could be 1st woman music director of NY … [Read more...] about Denmark lifts COVID restrictions, opens many public venues
The strange case of Novak Djokovic has shone a bright light on the eccentric behaviour of the world’s top tennis player. But it also has awoken the world to Australia’s own eccentric response to the Covid epidemic. Indeed, the cancellation of Djokovic’s visa on Friday sums up the uncompromising attitude of the Australian government over the past 22 months. For almost two years, the nation has ploughed its own lonely furrow in response to the pandemic. The state government in Victoria achieved a world record in locking down Melbourne six times in 20 months for a total of 262 day, just overtaking Buenos Aires as the most locked-down city in the world. Zero Covid was a deliberate policy of the state government and has thrown the country into a vicious political cycle: people got scared and demanded more restrictions; then the restrictions proved so popular that the state governments doubled down. But is this draconian policy starting to rebound now? From the very beginning of … [Read more...] about Djokovic proves Australia’s Zero Covid policy was always an unsustainable con
