Stoke's preparations for Saturday's much-anticipated clash with old foes Derby County will begin in earnest today. The players will be back in training today following Tuesday's League Cup victory at Wigan, leaving manager Nathan Jones to consider his starting XI to face the Rams after ringing the changes following each of Stoke's previous games so far this season. There were six team changes for last week's trip to Charlton after Stoke's opening-day loss to QPR, then eight for the game at the DW Stadium in midweek - so where does Jones go next? The Wigan win will have given him plenty of food for thought in terms of personnel and playing systems going into this weekend, so will he surprise fans again? We will have all the latest Potters news, opinion and gossip throughout the day. Stoke City youngster Josh Tymon has joined Portguese side FC Famalicao on a season-long loan. The top-flight club are coached by Joao Pedro Sousa, who worked with Tymon during his time at Hull City as assistant manager to Marco Silva. The 20-year left-back was signed by the Potters from relegated Hull two years ago, but has found first-team opportunities hard to come by, making just seven appearances in that time. In an interview earlier this summer, he admitted he might have to move on to resurrect his career. He told HullLive: “The last two years haven’t worked out how I wanted them to, so it’s only natural to wonder if you’ve done the right thing. “I’ve just got to look at trying to play 40 to 50 games next season. Wherever that is I couldn’t tell you, but that’s got to be my aim. I’ve got to do that for myself.” StokeonTrentLive has launched a WhatsApp service dedicated to keeping you up to date with the latest Stoke City … [Read more...] about Stoke City youngster agrees year-long loan with Portuguese club
In just three weeks' time we will be reflecting on Stoke City's opening game of the 2019/20 Championship season. As it is, today we are assessing Stoke's opening pre-season game, that 1-1 draw with MSV Duisburg in Germany. The Potters head to Wrexham on Wednesday night and then take on Tranmere at Prenton Park on Saturday as the Stoke boss fine tunes his first-team group. There will be an expected first appearance for Tommy Smith, who has this afternoon completed his transfer from Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Peter Etebo will soon be heading back to Stoke after his Nigeria team lost to Algeria in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals. Summer signing number seven done and dusted
Could this be the first summer since 2011 that Stoke City haven't signed a senior overseas player from overseas? Just about every single player they have been linked with this summer is resident on these shores - and that certainly goes for those they have already signed. A far cry from the heyday of overseas signings in 2015 when no fewer than five players were drafted in from abroad (see table). You have to go back eight summers for the last time Stoke strengthened purely on home soil during the summer window. Tony Pulis was still manager then, of course, and he had this curious aversion to buying players without seeing them first. Mark Hughes wasn't so fussy and that, combined with the club's Premier League pulling power and resources, and a growing network of scouts on foreign fields, would lead to no fewer than 17 overseas signings between 2012 and 2018. They have ranged from the sublime (Marko Arnautovic, Xherdan Shaqiri, Bojan at his peak) to the reliable (Geoff Cameron, Erik … [Read more...] about Are Stoke City about to end a summer transfer tradition?
No one can guarantee goals and glory but Stoke City can be sure of hard work and commitment when they bring in Millwall striker Lee Gregory. That's the verdict of his old manager Neil Aspin, the Port Vale legend who felt a bit awkward wishing his old protege well at a club that were his fierce rivals in the 1990s. Aspin managed Gregory at FC Halifax Town - back when the forward also worked as an electrician - and set him off on a career that would eventually lead to the Potteries... which is still to be officially confirmed. He said: “That step up from the Conference is a big one and it can take a bit of time to adjust. Perhaps it’s too late to make the Premier League now but he’s proven himself in the Championship. “I have to watch what I’m saying about Stoke being a big club but with them having spent that time in the Premier League and the support they get it’s another step up. He’ll be relishing the chance.” It's an interesting and … [Read more...] about New Stoke City signing’s old boss gives guarantee
