RISHI Sunak could slash tax on pints in next week's budget, Boris Johnson hinted yesterday. The PM was urged by MPs to consider giving pubs a boost by slicing their tax and slapping them on supermarket drinks instead. Brits have flocked to supermarket giants to get their hands on booze throughout the pandemic, but boozers have been closed for several months . The Treasury undertook a review on alcohol duty last year, and is mulling over the findings. Changes to alcohol duty could boost pub sales by 100 million pints a year and stop thousands of pubs closing their doors for good this year, the Social Market Foundation said last week. They urged him to add 14p to a supermarket can and slash 36p off the price of a pint down the pub. At PMQs yesterday the PM said it was "an extremely good point which I'm sure will be heard with great interest around the country". 5 things to know about carbon-free construction
We spend 90% of our time in the buildings where we live and work, shop and conduct business, in the structures that keep us warm in winter and cool in summer. But immense energy is required to source and manufacture building materials, to power construction sites, to maintain and renew the built environment. In 2019, building operations and construction activities together accounted for 38% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, the highest level ever recorded. To ensure that the Paris climate targets are met, the building and construction industry needs to become a climate leader by moving towards net zero construction. Its CO2 emissions need to be cut in half by 2030 for building stock to be carbon free by 2050, according to a recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In response, a raft of new net zero building initiatives are focused on curbing emissions across the whole building lifecycle. Millions of teens sitting on £400m in Child Trust Funds – could you get up to £2,000?
Teenagers could be in line for an average windfall of £2,000 after it was revealed that £400 million is lying unclaimed from child trust fund (CTF) pots. Around 6.3million CTFs have been set up since their launch in 2002, according to HMRC, and the first batch of accounts started maturing last year. But new figures, reported in the Daily Mail , have revealed that £400 million of the savings have still not been claimed. Around 200,000 CTFs have not been cashed-in, worth an average of £2,000. In many cases, a teenager may not know they are entitled to the cash. Roughly 4.5million CTFs were opened by parents or guardians, but 1.8million have been set up by HMRC when parents failed to do so, which means these kids could be in line for a hidden windfall. The accounts can only be accessed once the child it was opened for reaches age 18, so some teenagers may not know there is a CTF with their name on it. What is a child trust fund? CTFs were a government initiative … [Read more...] about Millions of teens sitting on £400m in Child Trust Funds – could you get up to £2,000?
