In South Yorkshire, a Sheffield charity which hands out food parcels says providing cupboard essentials is no longer enough - with some people unable to afford to heat meals up. Seven Rotorua reserves a step closer to being sold for housing
Seven of 10 Rotorua reserve sites identified for revocation and sale for housing have progressed to the next stage. The decision was made at a Rotorua Lakes Council Strategy, Policy and Finance Committee meeting on Thursday, in a marathon three-hour session that became heated at times, with accusations of “electioneering”. About 40 people filled most of the public gallery for the debate and decision, which had caused heated public debate in the months leading up to it. The proposal set out to revoke the reserve status of 10 sites in order to sell them for a mixture of public and open-market sale for housing . Cost of living: Household food bills rocket at fastest rate in more than a decade, research shows
Shoppers saw food prices rocket by 11.6% over the past month - the fastest rate since at least 2008 - adding the equivalent of £533 to the average annual grocery bill, industry data shows. Market research firm Kantar said the inflation hike for the four weeks to 7 August was the biggest it had recorded since it started tracking supermarket prices in this way 14 years ago. As a result, it reported sales of own-label value products increased by almost a fifth - 19.7% - as people sought to drive down the cost of their weekly shop. Shares in the British fashion brand jumped on Tuesday morning after it confirmed the agreement following months of takeover speculation. Four of the UK’s biggest housebuilders came under scrutiny from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) more than two years ago as it probed the leasehold housing market.
