Protesters have taken to the streets of the Bangladeshi capital following the death of a writer in a high-security prison on February 25. Mushtaq Ahmed was arrested 10 months ago under Bangladesh's Digital Security Act (DSA), which allows security forces to carry out arrests without a warrant of anyone criticizing the government online. Ahmed was arrested for comments he posted on Facebook criticizing the government's response to the coronavirus pandemic in May. His bail petition was rejected six times. He was sitting in pretrial detention when he died. Although the circumstances behind the sudden death of Ahmed are not yet clear, protesters are demanding justice, as well as the release of other prisoners who have been arrested under the DSA. They also want the government to repeal the act. Shocked by the news of Ahmed's death, Bärbel Kofler, Germany's federal human rights commissioner, called on Bangladesh's government to conduct "an independent inquiry" into the … [Read more...] about How is Bangladesh’s Digital Security Act muzzling free speech?

Amazon opens till-free grocery store in London – the online retailer’s first physical store outside the US
Amazon will open its first physical store outside the US today - but the shopping experience will be a bit different. Amazon Fresh is in Ealing, London, and it is much smaller than a supermarket. It will sell prepared meals, some groceries, and Amazon devices, as well as having a counter for collecting and returning online orders. Shoppers will scan a smartphone QR code to open the store's gates and their purchases will be tallied using ceiling cameras and shelf weight sensors. The technology can also register when someone has put an item back on the shelf, if they change their mind, for instance. Advertisement The shopper's on-file credit card is billed after they leave the shop and a receipt is emailed, meaning they can walk out of the store without waiting to pay. Amazon said the Just Walk Out technology uses "computer vision, deep learning algorithms, and sensor fusion". Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert reminds parents not to miss out on thousands of pounds of tax-free childcare
MARTIN Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert is urging parents not to miss out on thousands of pounds of tax-free childcare. As part of the tax-free childcare scheme, you can get up to £500 every three months - up to £2,000 a year - for each of your children. For disabled children, the maximum amount you could get rises to £4,000. The scheme essentially works like a savings account where for every £8 you save towards childcare costs, the government tops up an extra £2. So if you put away £8,000 a year for one child, the government will give you £2,000 totally free. But MoneySavingExpert estimates fewer than one in five of the 1.3 million families eligible for tax-free childcare aren’t taking advantage of the scheme. What help is available for parents for childcard costs? CHILDCARE can be a costly business but here is how you can get help: 30 hours free childcare - Parents of three and four-year-olds can apply for 30 hours free childcare a week. To qualify you must … [Read more...] about Martin Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert reminds parents not to miss out on thousands of pounds of tax-free childcare
Amazon set to open first checkout-free grocery store in the UK in coming days
Online behemoth Amazon is preparing to open its first walk-in store in the UK this week, selling items such as groceries and technology, without any checkouts. The multi-billion-pound retail empire - owned by the richest man in the world - is bringing its Amazon Go concept to Britain's high streets, allowing shoppers to pick up items without tills and minimal staff. The first shop will open 'this week' in Ealing in West London, according to reports. And as with its US stores, there will be no physical checkouts, with all shopping baskets scanned - and customers charged - when they leave the store via the Amazon Go app. The concept first launched in the US in 2018 and it was first reported last year that the shopping giant was eyeing as many as 30 locations in the UK for bricks and mortar stores. According to speculation, staff are preparing to open the shop in the coming days - with coverings hiding the Amazon branded store front on the busy West London high street.
