‘Love, dad’: Internet in tears after daughter finds late father’s handwritten note

August 17, 2022 by www.thenews.com.pk

A woman who lost her father nine years ago on July 27 2012 found a note written by him in his beekeeping equipment. Amy Clukey, a professor at the University of Louisville in the United States, posted an image of the handwritten note on Twitter, making the internet emotional. Clukey was fishing through her father's belongings when she found the letter. The father had addressed his children encouraging them toward beekeeping. The note read: "I hope this note is found by one of my children who is curious about beekeeping. Beekeeping is actually pretty easy and you can learn everything you need to know online." "Bees make more products than just honey and as a hobby, it can be a source of extra income. So don't be afraid, have courage. Good luck." In the end, he signed it off with, "Love Dad." "He is missed," Clukey wrote in her post. The post has garnered over  756,500 likes and over 40,000 retweets. Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’

August 17, 2022 by www.euronews.com

Facebook users in Iraq are exploiting the platform's lack of Arabic and Kurdish-language moderation policies in order to purchase guns online, according to a report. The study by the Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has found that the sale of weapons in Iraq is "rife" in Facebook comment sections. Social media giants have long been accused of failing to effectively moderate harmful and dangerous content, particularly in regions such as the Middle East. Meta — the parent company of Facebook — has fewer resources to tackle content in various languages and dialects than in English. The lack of moderation in Arabic and Kurdish has created an open gun market on Facebook in Iraq, said Moustafa Ayad, the ISD Executive Director for Africa, Middle East & Asia. "It was relatively easy to find weapons for sale on comments sections of very large Facebook pages, pages with over 2 million followers," Ayad told Euronews. According to his research, some of the … [Read more...] about Why the sale of guns on Facebook in Iraq is so ‘rife’

Five things we learned from Scottish Tory hustings

By Philip Sim Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Tory leadership The Conservative leadership bandwagon has rolled through Scotland amid a hail of policy pledges, placards and protests. What were the key takeaways from the hustings in Perth? 1. The Truss campaign has built momentum When the MPs ballot first whittled the field down to the final two, it was initially difficult to find Scottish Tories who supported Liz Truss. Many had backed other candidates, with Tom Tugendhat and Kemi Badenoch popular. Some were also supporting Penny Mordaunt. There were a few Rishi Sunak supporters right from the start, and he still has a healthy group of MSPs behind him. But the turnaround for Liz Truss has been huge. She now has more MSP backers than her opponent. And when she gathered a group of cheering supporters before … [Read more...] about Five things we learned from Scottish Tory hustings

Nationalise big five energy firms to cut bills, say Greens

August 17, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 3 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Tory leadership The Green Party is calling for the UK's big five energy suppliers to be nationalised and for prices to be returned to October 2021 levels. This would cut average household costs by more than £2,000 a year, it says. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP want energy prices to be frozen, but the Greens argue the current level is already unaffordable. Former Labour PM Gordon Brown has suggested some firms should be brought into temporary public ownership. The average energy bill - set by the regulator Ofgem - is expected to increase from £1,971 a year to £3,582 in October, and to £4,266 in January 2023. The region's two suppliers, SSE and Firmus, last increased their prices at the start of July. The price of gas on global markets has surged in the last two months. A renovation project at The Dhammapadipa Temple in Slateford saw a double garage converted into a prayer room complete with an 80 stone (500kg) gold-plated Buddha from Thailand.
