Economic policy failures often result from the simple confusion of money with output. Money is a unit of account, a store of value and a medium of exchange. It is useful only because it relates to something of value. Output, the goods and services we produce and consume, is what really matters. The difference is easy to show with a simple thought experiment. Suppose the lights go off in the UK this winter due to energy shortages. Would a tax cut that raises household disposable income turn the lights back on? No. Would a rise in the supply of fuel to power plants? Yes. Muddled thinking around money is the intellectual flaw behind debunked theories such as modern monetary theory, or the idea that every recession can be avoided with enough stimulus. Would-be prime ministers who seem to argue that debt-financed tax cuts are the panacea to Britain’s economic woes would do well to keep these basic principles in mind. Low taxes mainly benefit an economy in the long run when they … [Read more...] about Tax cuts need to be matched by shrinking the size of the state

Oregon Salon Owner Who Opened Claims State Sent Child Protective Services To Her Home | The Daily Wire
Speaking to Glenn Beck of The Blaze, an Oregon salon owner reiterated her charge that the state of Oregon had sent Child Protective Services to her home after she had opened her salon in defiance of state orders. Lindsey Graham, the owner of Glamour Salon in Salem, had claimed last week that Child Protective Services had visited her home. The press secretary in the communications office for the Oregon Department of Human Services stated, “Due to confidentiality laws, we cannot comment on whether or not there is an open CPS assessment against any individual. I want to stress however, that not following Governor Brown’s Stay Home, Save Lives executive order or not following physical distancing guidelines would never be a reason to assign a CPS assessment,” FOX 12 reported. Lindsey Graham, the owner of Glamour Salon in Salem, asserted to Beck, “They’re using every possible government organization to try and bully and intimidate me into shutting my doors. They have used OSHA; health … [Read more...] about Oregon Salon Owner Who Opened Claims State Sent Child Protective Services To Her Home | The Daily Wire
Catalonian town remembers victims of terror attacks one year on
The Catalan town of Cambrils held a service on Saturday to remember the victims of terrorist attacks a year ago that started in Barcelona and ended in the coastal resort. Sixteen people died and over 120 were injured when Islamic State group militants drove vehicles into crowds in both places. All the attackers were either shot dead by police or arrested. The service in Cambrils was attended by the President of Catalonia, Quim Torra: "Only through the path of harmony, coexistence, peace, fraternity, will we be a united group of people. We have to fight against any attack to those values. I believe that Cambrils, a year ago, today and throughout this year, has been an example of precisely what it means to live in harmony and in peace." On Friday a similar ceremony took place at the scene of the attack on Barcelona's famous La Rambla boulevard. That service was attended by the Spanish king, Felipe VI, despite the recent political tensions between Catalonian … [Read more...] about Catalonian town remembers victims of terror attacks one year on

How a Telegenic Billionaire Rose to Become the Presumptive U.S. Presidential Republican Nominee
Donald Trump has emerged as the presumptive Republican U.S. presidential nominee by assembling a coalition that proved remarkably consistent across geographic lines—and ultimately showed more breadth than any of his rivals. From the primary campaign’s beginning to its effective end Tuesday night, Trump’s core strength remained his overwhelming advantage among several big groups in the GOP electorate, particularly whites without a college education and men. But Trump also displayed more ability to reach across the party than any of his rivals, particularly in the weeks after his early April defeat in Wisconsin. In one telling contrast, Trump consistently fared much better among evangelical Christians—who Ted Cruz considered the foundation of his coalition—than Cruz did among voters who are not evangelicals. Over the past month, Trump has posted his best performances not only among the groups that preferred him from the outset, but many of those that had resisted him, including … [Read more...] about How a Telegenic Billionaire Rose to Become the Presumptive U.S. Presidential Republican Nominee
Planned Parenthood to spend record $50 million in midterm elections
Washington — Planned Parenthood, the nation's leading reproductive health care provider and abortion rights advocacy organization, plans to spend a record $50 million ahead of November's midterm elections , pouring money into contests where access to abortion will be on the ballot. The effort, which breaks the group's previous $45 million spending record set in 2020, comes months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , the landmark 1973 case that created a constitutional right to have an abortion. It will be waged by the organization's political and advocacy arms and will focus on governor's offices, U.S. Senate seats and legislative races in nine states where abortion rights could be restricted or expanded depending on the outcome at the ballot. The historic proportions of the midterm campaign, when less money is usually spent, were made possible by a torrent of money raised after the decision by the high court's new conservative majority, touching off a tectonic … [Read more...] about Planned Parenthood to spend record $50 million in midterm elections
The Origin of Vibes
V ibes has become a ubiquitous word in the past half decade, one many people now reach for when describing the distinct emotion given off by a place, or a thing. It is the prevailing shorthand for a cultural atmosphere, mood, and zeitgeist. Vibe talk has also entered politics. In this magazine in 2021, Derek Thompson invited readers to think of politics as a “ vibes war .” This spring, again in these pages, David A. Graham argued that John Fetterman won the Democratic Senate primary for Pennsylvania less on policy than “ on vibes .” And Rolling Stone pronounced that Fetterman was “neither centrist nor a progressive. He’s a vibe.” To the political commentator Will Stancil , “‘vibes’ is the idea that politics is rooted in and governed by mass psychology, which makes political behavior intrinsically difficult (and sometimes impossible) to model as a series of quantifiable inputs and predictable outputs, the approach favored by econometrically-inclined disciplines.” In … [Read more...] about The Origin of Vibes
Queen Elizabeth ‘might die’ in October, claims ‘time traveller’
Queen Elizabeth, at age 96, has reportedly been struggling with recurring health and mobility issues, and now, in a rather crude joke, a self-styled ‘time traveller’ on TikTok has made startling claims about when she might pass away, reported International Business Times. According to a TikTok user named @timetraveler_2082, the long-reigning monarch may not have much longer to live, and while his comments are to be taken with a grain of salt, he says that she could die as early as this year in October. Claiming to be ‘from the future’ and on the video-sharing app to ‘warn people’ of future events, the user stated: “In 2023 Big Ben collapses due to an unexpected earthquake. In 2030 GTA 7 is released. Queen Elizabeth II went in 2022 October 4th.” While some may have found the joke funny, it is pertinent to note that royal enthusiasts have been worried about the Queen’s health for about a year now after she spent a night in the hospital last October. She has since missed quite a … [Read more...] about Queen Elizabeth ‘might die’ in October, claims ‘time traveller’
