I refuse to spend a penny over £700 on my daughter’s wedding – she can get married in a school with a second-hand dress

· February 19, 2021 ·

A MUM has thrown her daughter the “cheapest wedding ever” after refusing to spend more than $1,000 (£700) on her big day. Shelley Watson has been penny pinching for years and was not about to change her ways for daughter Ashley’s wedding to groom Colby Cosgrove. The mum, who appears on TLC’s Extreme Cheapskates, is determined to cut costs wherever she can, beginning with the venue. Rather than splash out thousands on a grand country house Shelley takes her daughter to the local school gym. “The best part about it is it’s free because my friends work here, it’s the perfect place to get married” Shelley says. However, not everyone is convinced. Denise, Colby’s mother, says: “I thought it was a f***ing joke, nobody in their right mind is serious about having it in a gym. It’s ridiculous.” “This is going to be the cheapest wedding ever,” Ashley agrees. When it comes to flowers, Shelley has come up with a budget solution, heading to a holiday warehouse Shelley … [Read more...] about I refuse to spend a penny over £700 on my daughter’s wedding – she can get married in a school with a second-hand dress

Amnesty: Eritrea’s Tigray ‘massacre’ might be crime against humanity

· January 26, 2021 ·

Human rights organization Amnesty International said on Friday that "hundreds" of people were massacred by Eritrean troops in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region last November. Amnesty's Jean-Baptiste Gallopin, who conducted numerous interviews with residents and witness from the historical town of Axum, where the alleged massacre took place, told DW: "The perpetrators were Eritreans." "We interviewed 41 residents and witnesses from Axum over two research missions," he continued. "So we're pretty confident in our findings. We also used satellite imagery that allowed us to corroborate the burial sites." In addition, Gallopin said there had been "indiscriminate shelling on the city and looting by Eritrean forces." Couple double the value of their house with stunning renovation and it’s now worth £2million

· February 26, 2021 ·

A SAVVY couple managed to double the value of their house with a smart renovation - and it’s now worth £2 million. Mum Tracey Gill and her husband bought the house in a small village near East Sussex in 2016, and have been transforming it ever since. Tracey says her husband gave her a fairly wide brief when house-hunting, explaining he said: “Find a house ripe for transformation in the prettiest location. I knew I could change any house we bought so the important factor was the land and location.” The house, which they bought for £1.25million, dates back to 1730 in places and had low ceilings - not great for Tracey's 6ft4ins husband. Describing the state they bought it in, the mum-of-two said: “It was covered in cream pebble dash with concrete roof tiles, a north facing conservatory on the front of the house, modern leaded light windows, low ceilings, dark rooms, artexed walls, cheap fittings, decades old carpets, pink shag pile in the bathroom and an unimaginative … [Read more...] about Couple double the value of their house with stunning renovation and it’s now worth £2million

Eco-warrior Swampy among three activists to leave HS2 protest site – with one still underground

· February 26, 2021 ·

ECO-warrior Swampy was among three activists to leave an HS2 protest site yesterday — but one remains underground. Blue Sandford, 18 — the daughter of Scottish millionaire Roc Sandford — and an unnamed woman, 22, also left with Swampy , aka Dan Hooper, 48. The trio were taken to hospital as a precaution before being arrested. A network of tunnels was created in secret near London’s Euston station by HS2 Rebellion. Fellow activists protesting against the high-speed rail link said the trio are “well” and in “high spirits”.
