brexit countdown_bg Created with Sketch. Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds were seen leaving Balmoral yesterday hours after he was warned he could go to prison if he refuses to delay Brexit. The former Director of Public Prosecutions, Lord MacDonald, 66, said on Saturday that should Mr Johnson decide to ignore a bill which prevents a No Deal exit he could face prosecution. This is because, should Mr Johnson ignore the bill, he could be found in contempt of court. Asked if it would be 'an extreme outcome', Lord MacDonald said 'it is by convention that if you are found guilty of defying a court order then you are jailed'. A rebel anti-No Deal law is expected to receive Royal Assent on Monday after peers agreed to its passage on Friday. It will require the PM to seek a Brexit delay beyond October 31 if Britain and Brussels have not struck an agreement in the run up to Halloween. Boiled alive
When the human body gets to 42C, it starts to cook. The heat causes the proteins in each cell to irreversibly change, like an egg white as it boils. Even before that, the brain shuts down because of a lack of blood coming from the overworked, overheated heart. Muscles stop working, the stomach cramps and the mind becomes delirious. Death is inevitable. The gruesome effects of overheating have been largely forgotten as Europe swelters under record temperatures, from southern England's 36.5C to Bosnia's 41C. When weather forecasters predicted that the heat would get more intense across the continent today, most of us heaved a sigh at the thoughts of stuffy trains, sweaty buses, parched lawns and boiling offices. But perhaps we are being complacent. Already, people across Europe are succumbing to the heat. In France, at least 40 people, mostly elderly, have already died. The latest reported victim was a 90-year-old woman found dead in Orly, near Paris - her body temperature had reached … [Read more...] about Boiled alive

When New York met Mad Max: How the Big Apple has changed since The Warriors fled for their lives across a crime-filled city – from the Bronx to Coney Island – in the cult classic movie 40 years ago
In post-apocalyptic New York City, they had sway over the streets and subways. With names like the Van Cortlandt Rangers, Jones Street Boys, and the Electric Eliminators, the gangs sported garb to distinguish themselves and, by extension, their turf: tank tops, ripped jeans, camo jackets, silk bathrobes, and baseball uniforms coupled with fierce face paint. In the 1979 film ‘The Warriors,’ now celebrating the 40th anniversary of its release, the city was depicted as an unrecognizable hellscape where crime was rampant, public transit was empty, the streets were strewn with trash, graffiti ruled the parks and trains, and the NYPD were outnumbered. The film’s portrayal of the Big Apple wasn’t so far off the mark. In the 1970s, the city was drowning in debt and had to cut services as well as lay off thousands of police officers and firefighters. Things got so bad that the NYPD and fire department unions issued a remarkable pamphlet for tourists called ‘Welcome … [Read more...] about When New York met Mad Max: How the Big Apple has changed since The Warriors fled for their lives across a crime-filled city – from the Bronx to Coney Island – in the cult classic movie 40 years ago
