April 14, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 14 April Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A performing arts festival venue has opened in Coventry, to form part of the finale for its UK City of Culture year. The Assembly Festival Garden on Little Park Street will remain open until late September and host artists from around the world. It has been set up by event group Assembly Festival, which has been involved with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for 40 years. General manager Dani Rae described it as "a city centre oasis". She said they had listened to feedback after the festival was held in the city last year and promised a "new programme with some familiar faces". The festival in 2021 was put together in just six weeks she said, because of uncertainty over Covid restrictions, and they needed to rely on expertise brought in from Edinburgh. But this year she said there would be more local people … [Read more...] about Festival Garden opens as part of UK City of Culture finale

Keighley: ‘Golden days’ of shopping return at retro store

March 26, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 26 March Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A pop-up alternative department store has opened in a West Yorkshire town as part of an arts project based around the "golden days" of shopping. The K-Town Shopper Project aimed to bring a "retro" feel to the former Sunwin House shop on Hanover Street, Keighley, organisers said. Independent businesses from around the town have set up stalls inside, including food and drink sellers. Aimee Grundell, from the project, said it was a "trip down Memory Lane". She said: "The idea was to get footfall back in and around Keighley as some businesses weren't quite getting the customers they wanted, post-Covid. "It's getting back that buzz for shopping and what it used to be. It's about saying, let's shop local and support local businesses - but in a very creative way. "We've taken over this old department store, which has … [Read more...] about Keighley: ‘Golden days’ of shopping return at retro store

I'm standing in front of a Bankomat ATM on the shores of Lapad beach in Dubrovnik, trying to withdraw enough Croatian kuna to get me through the next few days. I've done the standard thing, looked up the exchange rate online, guessed at how much cash I'll need, calculated the rough exchange, and punched the amount into the ATM (using a debit card that doesn't usually attract any foreign conversion or withdrawal fees). How much would you pay for two cocktails and some crab legs? One Greek restaurant says $1000

May 17, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

A shocked American tourist is planning to go to the police on the Greek island of Mykonos after being charged close to NZ$1000 for two cocktails and a snack at a beach restaurant. The huge cost also included a NZ$129 tip. Eye-watering prices are not uncommon in Mykonos, but even by most standards this bill has left a distinctly bad taste. The unnamed tourist was with her daughter when she sat down at the restaurant.
