Shameless Boris Johnson has told friends he will "smash on" despite a string of resignations. The Prime Minister is said to have declared "I'm not going anywhere” despite Rishi Sunak , Sajid Javid and his Solicitor General all resigning last night. But MPs have other ideas - with a string of Tories from across the spectrum reading him the “last rites”. While the Cabinet are now mostly firm, the PM is being rocked by a string of junior resignations from government. Between 6pm on Tuesday and 2pm on Wednesday 21 MPs resigned from the government - nine ministers, nine parliamentary private secretaries, two trade envoys and one Tory vice chair. Back bench MPs across the spectrum, from moderate ex-ministers Chris Skidmore and Nick Gibb to culture war Red Wallers Jonathan Gullis, Tom Hunt and Lee Anderson, have charged over the top. For so many MPs, the revelation the PM knew about claims against MP Chris Pincher, then promoted him repeatedly, then “forgot” he’d been told, is … [Read more...] about All the Tories brutally turning against Boris Johnson’s leadership as MPs ‘read last rites’

Novak Djokovic resigned to US Open fate as he prepares for Wimbledon title defence
Novak Djokovic has conceded "there is not much I can do" about this year's US Open with the star set to miss a second Grand Slam of 2022. Djokovic, 35, will begin the defence of his Wimbledon title on Monday, when he faces South Korean player Kwon Soon-woo on Centre Court. The top seed cannot meet Rafael Nadal , who remains on course for a calendar Grand Slam, until the final. On the contrary, it now looks like SW19 will represent Djokovic's last chance of winning a Slam title this year. He's already missed the Australian Open , having been deported out of the country the day before the tournament began following an explosive saga over his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19 . He did take his place in the main draw at the French Open at Roland Garros, despite his build-up being hindered by a lack of match practice. At Roland Garros, he was beaten in an epic quarter-final by eventual winner Nadal . But the vaccination issue is now set to cost him a place … [Read more...] about Novak Djokovic resigned to US Open fate as he prepares for Wimbledon title defence

What O. J. Simpson Means to Me
M y reaction to O. J. Simpson’s arrest for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman was atypical. It was 1994 . I was a young black man attending a historically black university in the majority-black city of Washington, D.C., with zero sympathy for Simpson, zero understanding of the sympathy he elicited from my people, and zero appreciation for the defense team’s claim that Simpson had been targeted because he was black. O. J. Simpson wasn’t black. He came of age in the 1960s—the era of Muhammad Ali’s opposition to the Vietnam War and John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s black-power salute at the 1968 Olympics. But the O. J. Simpson I knew, and the one poignantly depicted this year in Ezra Edelman’s epic documentary, O.J.: Made in America , recognized only one struggle—the struggle to advance O. J. Simpson. When the activist Harry Edwards attempted to enlist Simpson in the Olympic boycott, Simpson rebuffed him and later claimed that organizers like … [Read more...] about What O. J. Simpson Means to Me
When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
Paradise reopened – Bali hopes for tourists to return
By Richard Baimbridge Published 18 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Coronavirus pandemic From his home high atop the cliffs overlooking Bali's resort district of Jimbaran, German expat Pak Kriss has a perfect, unobstructed view of the island's international airport. Composed of a single runway stretching out into the ocean, Mr Kriss notes that at its pre-pandemic peak, it handled some 700 flights a day, ushering more than 6.3 million international tourists a year to the Indonesian island. "Then, one day… nothing," he says with a sweep of his hands. He expected it to last a few weeks, but it went on for two years. In 2020 the island received just one million foreign visitors, almost all before Bali and the rest of the world went into lockdown in March of that year. Then in 2001 the island reportedly saw just 45 overseas tourists. … [Read more...] about Paradise reopened – Bali hopes for tourists to return
Harry & Meg will exploit status for cash at Jubilee, if they had any compassion, they’d visit her dad, says Piers Morgan
WE'RE now just a week away from the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, a four-day celebration of Britain’s greatest ever Monarch and her 70 glorious years on the throne. I’m excited about it because amid all the hideously depressing news at the moment, from war and mass shootings to devastating economic crisis, this is a chance for my country to put a smile on the world’s face by doing what we do best – pomp, pageantry, and a one helluva party. It’s also a time to pay due tribute to a remarkable 96-year-old woman who during her lengthy reign has represented the very best of British values - dignity, humility, hard work, stoicism, calm, stiffer upper lip and selfless duty. Unfortunately, next week will also see the arrival of a royal couple who represent the very opposite. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Southern England county that I come from and where they’ve spent about three hours, are a pair of undignified, whining, hypocritical, virtue-signalling, selfish wastrels. … [Read more...] about Harry & Meg will exploit status for cash at Jubilee, if they had any compassion, they’d visit her dad, says Piers Morgan
