Games Inbox: The fate of Kratos in God Of War Ragnarök, Splatoon 3 concerns, and Wave Race 64 love
The Wednesday letters page considers the madness of video game release schedules, as one reader talks up the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected] End of the story They’ve already said that this will be the last Norse game, so there’s two obvious eventualities at the end: either Kratos is alive and ready to go take on a new pantheon of gods or he dies and his story comes to an end, with his son or someone else taking over as the lead of the series. Personally, I think Kratos is doomed. I hated him in the PlayStation 2 games but his rejuvenation in the reboot is some of the best writing I’ve ever seen in a video game, especially as his changing attitude took place in front of you, as you played, and yet it seemed very subtle and organic. Without even getting into spoiler speculation, I just don’t see him going on to live happily after ever or becoming some kind of avenging superhero. Nope, I think … [Read more...] about Games Inbox: The fate of Kratos in God Of War Ragnarök, Splatoon 3 concerns, and Wave Race 64 love
“The Undeclared War” star Simon Pegg and creator talk predicting the future
The Simpsons is not the only show that is able to predict the future to a scarily accurate degree, as The Undeclared War has been able to do exactly that. Peacock's new drama is set in 2024 and follows Saara Parvin (Hannah Khalique-Brown), a university student who joins Britain's Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) for an apprenticeship as an analyst with Danny Patrick (Simon Pegg). There, Saara is quickly drawn into an intense conflict between the U.K. and Russia when the latter hacks the other country's electoral system that GCHQ need to retaliate to, leading to a series of cyber attacks that are at risk of creating a full-scale war. Pegg and show creator Peter Kosminsky spoke to Newsweek about the way in which the show was able to foresee events, and how "terrifying" it was to dive into the dark realities of cyber warfare. 'The Undeclared War' Star Simon Pegg and Creator Talk Predicting the Future Although set in the near future, the show makes several … [Read more...] about “The Undeclared War” star Simon Pegg and creator talk predicting the future
Russia’s most divisive director releases Oscar-nominated film in UK
As the father in Andrei Zvyagintsev's film Loveless drives to work, ignorant of the fact that his son has just gone missing, he listens to accusations on the radio that the media are “whipping up public hysteria” about the end of the world. The director's careful choice of radio programme hints at the tense siege mentality that predominates in Russia , where state television breathlessly details nefarious American plots and restrictive laws are passed so fast that parliament is often nicknamed the “crazy printer”. It is not quite as politically charged as his 2014 masterpiece Leviathan , but the latest movie's astringent depiction of Russia in the late Putin years has sparked similar criticisms of Russophobia at home following its June debut. It opens in the UK on Friday and in the United States on 16 February. The anger is tempered by a grudging respect since Loveless, like Leviathan before it, has been nominated for an Oscar for best foreign picture, as well as a … [Read more...] about Russia’s most divisive director releases Oscar-nominated film in UK
Black Panther’s Letitia Wright to star in thriller about real-life Silent Twins June and Jennifer Gibbons
Black Panther star Letitia Wright has reportedly been signed up to star in The Silent Twins, a thriller based on the true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons. The movie, which will be helmed by Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska will follow the real life story of a pair of identical twins, originally from Barbados but who grew up in Wales. They became known as The Silent Twins as they refused to communicate with anyone but each other, and ended up in Broadmoor Hospital after they turned to crime. Jennifer and June spent 11 years in Broadmoor where they were studied by doctors and psychologists, but the pair would still only communicate with each other and became catatonic when separated. They had a long-standing agreement that if one of them died, the other should begin to speak and to live a normal life – but the circumstances surrounding Jennifer’s death were equally as mysterious. When they were transferred from Broadmoor to another clinic in 1993, they made the … [Read more...] about Black Panther’s Letitia Wright to star in thriller about real-life Silent Twins June and Jennifer Gibbons
Instagram stars are CLONING their dogs so even death doesn’t end pet profile fame
INSTAGRAM influencers are cloning their dogs to keep popular pet profiles relevant even after the animal passes away. The world of 'petfluencers' is thriving on social media apps like Instagram as online content of cute animals generally garners a huge following. However, in a seemingly fantastical turn of events, influencers who run popular pet accounts are now creating genetic duplicates of their animals. And for some, the driving factor for this pet-cloning is even more bizarre: To allow influencers to keep churning out content on their pets' Instagram accounts after they die. While this concept of pet cloning might sound like something out of a 1980s sci-fi film (i.e. Pet Semetary), the reality is that, well, it's reality. And thanks to companies like Texas-based ViaGen, the process is accessible to anyone who has tens of thousands of dollars to spare. ViaGen utilizes IVF-like technology that uses the original pet’s cells to make an embryo, which is then … [Read more...] about Instagram stars are CLONING their dogs so even death doesn’t end pet profile fame

Jessica Raine: I was a little bit ashamed of wanting to be an actress – I associated them with a falseness
Jessica Raine has just finished watching The Handmaid’s Tale , and is incensed because, she tells me, she got there first. ‘I had the idea to bring The Handmaid’s Tale to TV a couple of years ago and I brought it to a producer and they were like, “Oh my God, that’s such a great idea.” And then we discovered it had been snapped up [by Elisabeth Moss]. It’s amazing, but how annoying!’ She may have missed out on the chance to bring Margaret Atwood’s dystopian masterpiece to the small screen, but the 35-year-old British actress isn’t exactly short of high-profile TV roles – far from it. After working in theatre, Jessica made her name in 2012 when she was chosen to play the lead in one of the most popular period dramas of the decade. As Jenny Lee, the prim and proper young nurse in Call the Midwife, the BBC’s warm-hearted drama about midwifery in post-war London, she had us weeping every Sunday evening as the nation took the series firmly into its heart. Viewing figures topped 10 … [Read more...] about Jessica Raine: I was a little bit ashamed of wanting to be an actress – I associated them with a falseness
James Norton: ‘I got death threats when I was buying the milk after Happy Valley’
The British actor James Norton has said he is not afraid about the response to his upcoming Russian mafia show as he has already received death threats of his role in Happy Valley. Norton, who is tipped as the next James Bond, starred in the Bafta-winning crime drama as Tommy Lee Royce, a psychopath and violent ex-convict who abducts and ties up a young woman. He revealed that his portrayal of the character led to death threats from members of the public, meaning he has no concerns about his safety when the BBC’s new big budget drama McMafia airs in January. “Some people have asked me if I’m worried about getting death threats for exposing how the Russian mafia works,” Norton told Radio Times magazine. “That would be nothing new. Playing Tommy Lee Royce, I’d get death threats buying milk in my local shop.” Norton, 32, will play the lead role of McMafia, the corporation’s forthcoming adaptation of British journalist Misha Glenny’s best-selling non-fiction book about … [Read more...] about James Norton: ‘I got death threats when I was buying the milk after Happy Valley’
