Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war

June 28, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

The head of the Army today says the UK must be ready for war with Russia. Four months on from Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, General Sir Patrick Sanders is set to compare the assault to the rise of Nazi Germany . He will say that Britain is facing its "1937 moment" and must be ready to "fight and win" to ward off the threat from Russia. In his first public speech as Chief of the General Staff , Sir Patrick will say the UK must be prepared to "act rapidly" to contain Russian expansionism. Nato last night pledged to massively increase its forces available on high alert to more than 300,000 troops, a more-than seven-fold increase. Sir Patrick's intervention is likely to put pressure on Mr Johnson to maintain the size of the Armed Forces after plans were announced to reduce troop numbers in a move to a more modern military. Defence editor Danielle Sheridan reports that, in a separate speech today, Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, is to call for increased … [Read more...] about Tuesday morning news briefing: General says UK must be ready for war

A top Russian ice hockey star poised to play in the US is to be ‘forced instead into Vladimir Putin’s army’ which is at war in Ukraine . Ivan Fedotov, 25, was rushed to an army enlistment office after being dramatically held by a squad of uniformed and plain-clothed police officers in St Petersburg. The action - accusing him of seeking to dodge the military draft - is seen as revenge for signing to play in the US for the Philadelphia Flyers. Top goalkeeper Fedotov was formerly with CSKA - a club with close ties to the Russian army. READ MORE: Bernie Ecclestone says he'd "take a bullet" for Vladimir Putin as he's "first class" Fontanka news outlet reported he can now be sent to the Russian army rather than the US, but he might also be jailed. “He has just been detained ‘for evading the army’,” reported Russian journalist Dmitry Navosha. Grand Prix Priest who ran on British GP track ended up starring on Britain’s Got Talent

July 3, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk

The Formula One travelling circus heads to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix this weekend with the knowledge that while things may get wild on the track between the drivers, the spectators also like to get involved from time to time. The legendary racecourse is a firm favourite on the motorsport calendar, and will remain so until at least 2024 following the latest contract extension. World champion Max Verstappen will aim to extend his lead over his rivals in this season's rankings, while Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to put a disappointing campaign so far behind him to achieve a historic ninth victory at Silverstone. There have been plenty of iconic British Grand Prix racing memories on the track, such as Nigel Mansell's battle with Ayrton Senna in 1991 and Michael Schumacher's sensational win in the rain in 1998. However, the British Grand Prix has also been host to its fair share of wild moments, and perhaps none more so than Neil Horan's unexpected cameo. Cameroonian activist pushed for restitution of deity

January 1, 2022 by www.dw.com

Restitution activist Njobati Sylvie could not hide her joy when Germany's Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation announced that a statue of Ngonnso would be returned to Cameroon. Ngonnso is a mother deity of the Nso people in northwestern Cameroon. A statue of her was taken by Kurt von Pavel, a German colonial officer in Cameroon, who subsequently donated her to Berlin's Ethnological Museum in 1903. "I feel super elated, it has been a journey that has culminated to a win for the Nso community, Cameroon and by and large the entire African continent," Njobati told DW. Ngonnso has a central role for the Nso as she is considered a mother deity The restitution journey Njobati started the Twitter campaign #BringBackNgonnso in 2020, which played a large part in raising awareness for the restitution cause. But her activism actually started before that — when she decided to reconnect with her Nso heritage and trace her roots. Njobati grew up in Cameroon's Anglophone region … [Read more...] about Cameroonian activist pushed for restitution of deity
