New details have emerged regarding clashes between a U.S.-led coalition and an alliance of Syrian and Russian forces fighting on behalf of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a new, dramatic report. Citing interviews and documents obtained by the newspaper, The New York Times revealed how a four-hour firefight erupted February 7 in eastern Syria, leaving hundreds of pro-Syrian government fighters—including Russians—dead. Syria has blamed the U.S. for the bloodshed, which the U.S. argues was in self-defense. Russia has distanced itself from the incident, telling the Pentagon that the Russians involved were volunteer fighters, not part of Russia's armed forces. When the dust finally settled, the article cited a Pentagon estimate of 200 to 300 "pro-regime" forces killed. Only one member of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces and none of the roughly 40 U.S. Special Forces involved were injured. The U.S. and Russia are both involved in operations against the Islamic State … [Read more...] about U.S. attacks that killed “hundreds” of Russians and Syrians detailed in new report

Boris Johnson named honorary citizen of Odesa
The Ukrainian Black Sea city of Odesa has made Boris Johnson an honorary citizen, the first Briton to receive the award. Mr Johnson is feted across Ukraine for the military help he has given the country since Russia invaded on Feb. 24 "We highly appreciate the help of your country, your prime minister," Gennady Trukhanov, Odesa's mayor, told BBC in an interview. "I would like to emphasise that this is the struggle of the entire civilised community against fascism version 2.0, and in this struggle Mr Johnson will become the first Honorary Citizen of the city from Great Britain, for the entire existence of the award, since 1862." British shoulder-mounted anti-tank missiles, weapons training and battlefield intelligence have been credited with helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia , which has more weapons, soldiers and tanks. Last month, Mr Johnson also pledged to send long-range missiles to Ukraine. Joe Biden’s policies: The President’s views on Covid-19, immigration and the environment
Joe Biden won the US presidential election – with running mate Kamala Harris – after receiving the most votes of any US candidate in history. It is widely expected that Biden will roll the clock back as much as possible to January 2017, when he and Barack Obama left office. Biden wasted no time signing executive orders , with his official schedule for January 20 showing he set aside 30 minutes in the afternoon to begin that process. Biden signed 17 orders and actions just hours after being sworn in as US leader to break from policies of departing President Donald Trump and set new paths on immigration, the environment, fighting Covid-19 and the economy. In first-day moves, he ended Trump’s much-assailed ban on visitors from several majority-Muslim countries and halted construction of the wall that Trump ordered on the US-Mexico border to stem illegal immigration. He also set a mask mandate on federal properties to stem the spread of Covid-19; restored protections of … [Read more...] about Joe Biden’s policies: The President’s views on Covid-19, immigration and the environment

Mother of captured American soldier in Ukraine says part of recent conversation with son appeared ‘scripted’
The mother of one of two American soldiers captured by Russian forces says parts of a recent conversation with her son appeared 'scripted.' Alexander Drueke, 40, and Andy Huynh, 27, both of Alabama , were captured by Russian forces on June 11 when they didn't return to a meeting spot after their group came under heavy fire in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine near the Russian border. Drueke's mother, Lois 'Bunny' Drueke, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama spoke to her son on the phone Tuesday night for 10 minutes. Bunny said she believes parts of the conversation did not seem to be coming directly from him. 'It was obvious that there were two things going on,' she told Good Morning America (GMA). 'One, I could tell when he was telling me something scripted. And the other things he was saying was just the regular conversation, just ordinary conversations that mothers really treasure.' Bunny (pictured with her son at an unknown time) said the other parts of the phone … [Read more...] about Mother of captured American soldier in Ukraine says part of recent conversation with son appeared ‘scripted’
Russian President Vladimir Putin jokes Trump should visit Syria, Assad says he will host him
Russian President Vladimir Putin jokingly suggested that President Donald Trump should visit Syria during a candid moment with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who appeared to approve of hosting the U.S. leader. The remarks are in footage that has recently surfaced in Russian-language media from Putin's trip last week to Syria , where he met Assad at the Russian military headquarters in Damascus before touring a number of religious and cultural sites for Eastern Orthodox Christmas. At one stop, the Mariamite Cathedral of Damascus, the two leaders could be seen on camera laughing alongside Greek Orthodox Patriarch John X of Antioch. "If Trump arrives along this road, he will be a good man," Assad said, to which Putin laughed before replying, "He will change for the better." After a brief pause, the Russian leader added, "Invite him, he will come." Assad laughed and responded, "I will tell him." Though previous presidents have met with Assad, and his father before him, the … [Read more...] about Russian President Vladimir Putin jokes Trump should visit Syria, Assad says he will host him
How seaside town a stone’s throw from millionaires’ row was turned into ‘drugs capital of the South’
A SHADOWY figure races across the high street to a gaunt-looking couple. Within seconds they’re passed a small bag and he darts away through the shoppers and families. It’s not an unusual sight in Boscombe , Dorset , which for years was known as the “ drugs capital of the South” and ranked on the top 50 worst places to live in England . While the former spa town has shaken off that unsavoury title this year, locals nonetheless paint a picture of rampant drug use, street drinking and vicious attacks. It’s clearly a tale of two Boscombes, as just a stone’s throw away properties overlooking the picturesque beaches can sell for £1.5million. In the first of our Broke Britain series, where we visit towns struggling to survive amid the cost of living crisis, Boscombe locals speak of violence on the streets and a "forgotten" high street on its knees after a number of shop closures. When The Sun visited we saw rundown rows of pound shops and vacant businesses, many of … [Read more...] about How seaside town a stone’s throw from millionaires’ row was turned into ‘drugs capital of the South’
