Speaking at a news conference Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia would have to carpet-bomb the Ukrainian capital and kill its residents to take the city. Meanwhile, the Russian troops are attempting to encircle Kyiv further, fighting against heavy resistance in the west and the north of the city. And after twelve days of siege, the strategic southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol is without water, gas, electricity or communications, and people were seen fighting for food in recent days. The situation is "almost desperate", warned Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). The number of civilians killed during the siege of Mariupol reached 1,582, and some of the casualties had to be buried in mass graves. Local authorities fear that the actual number might be much higher. 03.12.2022 09:24 Saturday's main developments: The worst of the fighting overnight took place in Irpin, Mykolaiv and Sumy, according to the General Staff of the … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Kyiv would only fall ‘if carpet bombed’ by Russia, Zelenskyy says

Karen Carney exclusive: How the Euros changed my life – and who will be England’s star this summer
It was 2005 the last time England hosted a home Women's Euros , and a little known 17-year-old from Birmingham stole the show on the opening night. Fresh-faced, twinkle-toed winger Karen Carney's stoppage-time strike gave England a 3-2 victory over Finland that set the crowd – and the competition – alight. "I was this little skinny kid who was coming on the scene, and the tournament definitely changed my life," she reflects now. That moment at the Etihad Stadium, as it is now known, came just four months after Carney's England debut. She would go on to win 144 caps for her country. "That [goal] catapulted my career really," she tells Telegraph Sport. "I was unknown and it was my favourite tournament, an unbelievable summer in '05. I remember people wearing our jerseys, walking down the streets, and there was a massive buzz." This summer's opening match , being held just four miles down the road at Old Trafford, will be a sellout and Carney expects an exponential increase on … [Read more...] about Karen Carney exclusive: How the Euros changed my life – and who will be England’s star this summer

Nick Kyrgios’ ex breaks silence as Wimbledon star faces court over assault claim
Chiara Passari, the ex-girlfriend of Nick Kyrgios , has broken her silence after the tennis star was accused of assaulting her and ordered to face court next month. It was reported on Tuesday—the day before Kyrgios' Wimbledon quarter-final against Cristian Garin—that Kyrgios will appear in front of a Canberra Court on August 2. The 27-year-old is facing one charge of common assault after allegedly grabbing Passari during a December 2021 incident. Speaking to News Corp, Passari said she informed ACT police of the incident in December, but only now has he been told to face a judge. Some fans suggested the timing of the summons was 'convenient' given his current progress at SW19, but Passari has suggested she had no influence over the timing of the order. “Thank you," came her response to an Instagram follower who had suggested there was nothing suspicious on her part given such delays can often occur. "Finally someone smart enough to understand how the justice system … [Read more...] about Nick Kyrgios’ ex breaks silence as Wimbledon star faces court over assault claim

Hamid Nouri: Prison massacre accused to give evidence at landmark trial in Sweden
A former Iranian official accused of crimes against humanity is expected to give evidence under oath for the first time on Tuesday at a landmark case in Stockholm. Hamid Nouri, 60, is on trial over his alleged involvement in a 1988 prison massacre in Iran. He denies the charges. The killings were allegedly an act of revenge ordered by supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini against members of the Mujahideen-e-Khalq, who supported the 1979 revolution but then turned against the new leadership and fought for Iraq under Saddam Hussein, during the Iran-Iraq war. The order came just a few days after the end of the 1980-1988 war. Human rights groups say about 5,000 people were killed in prisons across the country, but the opposition claim that the number was six times that figure. In 2018, the UN deemed the massacre a "crime against humanity". Charged with more than 100 murders and grave war crimes, Nouri is expected to give evidence that allegedly implicates … [Read more...] about Hamid Nouri: Prison massacre accused to give evidence at landmark trial in Sweden
Recession fears grow as rising prices hit spending
Published 12 May comments Comments Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The risk of a recession has risen, analysts have warned, after the economy shrank during March just as the UK had recovered from the pandemic. Higher prices are "beginning to bite", the UK statistics body said , with people spending less and cutting down on car journeys due to high fuel costs. The impact of higher energy bills in April has also yet to be seen. The economy grew by 0.8% over the first three months of the year, but in March it shrank by 0.1% as people cut back. The main boost to the economy came in January, as hospitality and travel industries recovered from coronavirus pandemic restrictions. However, that came before the war in Ukraine and before households began to feel the pinch of higher prices. Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economics, said the … [Read more...] about Recession fears grow as rising prices hit spending
What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
“D uck and cover!” a mechanized voice screamed. The ground shook and the window rattled. I rolled from my bed to the floor of my trailer and felt for the armor I’d forgotten in my office. I lay there and sweated and swore. The voice from the loudspeaker urged me to get away from the windows. I was inside a tin can. I crawled to the door. My hand was on the knob when I realized I was naked. The next impact knocked the air conditioner to the floor. I grabbed a light-blue cotton robe and bolted. To hear more feature stories, see our full list or get the Audm iPhone app. I raced along a row of sandbags, one hand holding the robe closed. The duck-and-cover bunkers were 100 feet away. Another series of explosions, and I hit the rocks. I was lying there, panting, when I saw a bright-yellow bunker tucked behind a row of sandbags and palm trees. I was up, running, full out. My robe fell open and flew out behind me. Another hit. I was 20 feet away. Ten. Five. I crashed into the … [Read more...] about What I Wish I’d Known About Sexual Assault in the Military
