Captain America Might Be Evil in Comics Now
Excerpt from Captain America: Steve Rogers No. 1. Photo: Jesus Saiz/Marvel Entertainment Superhero comics, more than most entertainment products, live and die on their ability to produce cliffhangers. Pop into a comics shop and look at the last page of any given superhero comic and you’re likely to find a big reveal or how-are-they-gonna-get-out-of-this-one incident designed to get you to buy the next issue. Today, the comics world got a big one. In the last page of Captain America: Steve Rogers No. 1 (don’t worry about why it’s a first issue even though the character has been around for 75-odd years), we find out that Cap is, in some capacity, working for sinister world-domination organization Hydra. He pushes a hero out of a plane and, in a full-page panel, intones, “Hail Hydra.” The installment — written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Jesus Saiz* — has the comics Twittersphere abuzz . Earlier in the issue we see a flashback to Steve’s younger days in 1920s New York, and … [Read more...] about Captain America Might Be Evil in Comics Now

America’s Unfinished Second Founding
In the closing months of 1865, the U.S. was at a crossroads. The Civil War was over. President Lincoln was dead. And the nation was beginning to confront a series of vexing questions in the aftermath of the Civil War. How does the U.S. answer the Declaration of Independence’s prophetic call for equality? How does the country define what it means to be a U.S. citizen? How broadly should the right to vote sweep? And what role should the federal government play in protecting the civil rights of all? If these issues sound familiar, it’s because the questions America faced then are still present today. A century and a half ago, these issues pitted President Andrew Johnson against congressional Republicans. On one side, Johnson was “for a white man’s government” and a swift return to normalcy. The South had to renounce secession and accept the abolition of slavery, but little else. Abolition aside, Johnson would leave Lincoln’s “new birth of freedom”—and the fate of the newly freed … [Read more...] about America’s Unfinished Second Founding
Map of Finland, Russia and Sweden reveals how Putin’s war machine is on Nato’s doorstep
Vladimir Putin’s gamble that invading Ukraine would undermine the unity of Nato appears to have backfired spectacularly. With a clear and present danger to unite them, member countries of the military alliance are more committed than ever to deeper security ties and the principle of collective defence. Finland will soon be followed by Sweden in applying for membership, expanding Nato’s footprint across the north of the continent . But the move also draws into focus a problem which predates the war in Ukraine and will exist long after: the proximity of the Kremlin war machine to European territory. Russia’s Western flank, which already butts up against Nato at Estonia and Latvia, is heavily fortified. Soon the alliance’s new outer extremity, extended by 800 miles along the east of Finland, comes to within a stone’s throw of even more of Russia’s vast military. The Severomorsk naval base, the heart of its northern fleet, now lies just 115 miles from Nato’s … [Read more...] about Map of Finland, Russia and Sweden reveals how Putin’s war machine is on Nato’s doorstep
Russian war crime suspects featured in card decks given to Ukrainian army
Decks of playing cards featuring pictures of suspected Russian war criminals are on their way to Ukrainian soldiers, replicating an idea used during the Iraq War. General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, in a Facebook post Friday announced the release of the two decks he said were developed by international intelligence nonprofit InformNapalm. The cards come as Russia's invasion against Ukraine enters a phase that's brought more attention to alleged atrocities carried out by Russian forces. Writing in the post, Zaluzhnyi said that the U.S. Army Central Command released decks of playing cards to troops that featured information on high-ranking members of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's regime. Released in 2003 after U.S.-led forces toppled Hussein, the cards included the title, name and in some cases a photo of wanted officials that might be spotted by troops in the area. Zaluzhnyi said that volunteers with InformNapalm this year carried on the … [Read more...] about Russian war crime suspects featured in card decks given to Ukrainian army

The Speechwriter: Inside the Bush Administration During the Iraq War
My youngest daughter was born in December 2001: a war baby. When my wife nursed little Beatrice in the middle of the night, she'd hear F-16s patrolling the Washington skies. During the weeks before, anthrax attacks had killed five people and infected 17 others. What would come next? In October, I attended a crowded briefing in the fourth-floor auditorium of the Executive Office Building, at which the Secret Service explained its plans to protect the White House against a biological attack. They weren't very reassuring. Basically, we'd all be dead. Even more disturbing were the small-session briefings by staffers for the new Homeland Security adviser. They warned of simultaneous car bombings at strategic intersections, targeted assassinations of officials as they retrieved their morning papers from their stoops, and poisonous gases released in Metro stations. Like many Washingtonians, my wife and I had prepared an emergency kit in the basement: canned goods, bottled water, … [Read more...] about The Speechwriter: Inside the Bush Administration During the Iraq War
