Germany lose to Netherlands as mistakes prove costly

· January 24, 2021 ·

Netherlands 2-1 Germany, De Koel Stadium (Groenen 16', van de Donk 60' — Freigang 44') In the final showdown of this mini-tournament, Germany were finally made to pay for their imprecision at both ends of the pitch. "We simply have to score goals. I felt like tearing my hair out today," Voss-Tecklenburg said afterwards. After both sides had beaten Belgium — the third nation in this series of friendlies between three countries' bidding to host the 2027 World Cup — the stage was set for the most anticipated game. Unaided by the absence of talismanic centre-back Marina Hegering (muscle problems), Germany's cohesion suffered as a back four with three new faces struggled to gel. The Dutch attack offered a stark contrast. Voss-Tecklenburg had warned beforehand of the Dutch's well-established rhythms, and proof came in the form of Jackie Groenen's opening goal. Vivianne Miedema charged deep into the box to collect a through ball, before finding her unmarked teammate with … [Read more...] about Germany lose to Netherlands as mistakes prove costly

Covid pandemic has left more than 700,000 people out of work with 60% under-25

· February 23, 2021 ·

The number of UK workers on payrolls increased by 83,000 last month despite ongoing national lockdown restrictions. However, 726,000 jobs have been lost since February 2020 when the pandemic began, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Tuesday. It means the total number of Brits who are jobless now stands at 1.74million. Jonathan Athow, deputy national statistician at the ONS, said the vast majority of job losses affected the under-25s age group. The official jobless rate ticked up to 5.1% in the three months to December from 5%. But the ONS said pay growth is running at its highest level since 2008, with 86,000 more people recruited last month, showing signs of a recovering market. Athow said: "The latest monthly tax figures show tentative early signs of the labour market stabilising, with a small increase in the numbers of employees paid through payroll over the last couple of months - though there are still over 700,000 fewer people employed than before the … [Read more...] about Covid pandemic has left more than 700,000 people out of work with 60% under-25

Baarack the sheep loses 35kg of fleece in much-needed trip to the barbers

· February 25, 2021 ·

Lockdown has been tough for all of our hairstyles but one plucky sheep has been given his first trim in what could have been many many years. The wild and struggling animal was found in a forest in Australia with a fleece that was so overgrown he could barely see. When it was fully removed his fleece weighed more than 35kg (77lbs). The sheep, which has been named Baarack, was found by a member of the public who contacted the Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary near Lancefield, Victoria, about 37 miles (60km) north of Melbourne. "It would appear Baarack was once an owned sheep," said the Mission's Kyle Behrend. Advertisement "He had at one time been ear-tagged, however these appear to have been torn out by the thick matted fleece around his face.
