Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has accused Lewis Hamilton of having a short memory in the wake of his controversial comments about the seven-time world champion and Russian despot Vladimir Putin. Ecclestone sparked outrage last week when he defended former F1 driver Nelson Piquet, who, it emerged, used racial and homophobic slurs when talking about Hamilton in an interview last year. The 91-year-old also declared he would “take a bullet” for Putin, despite his invasion of neighbouring Ukraine , which has seen thousands of innocent civilians killed or displaced. In response, Hamilton described Ecclestone as an “older voice” who no longer represented the sport. Cabinet Office accused of lying to MPs to keep Mountbatten papers private
The Cabinet Office lied to MPs in an attempt to keep Earl Mountbatten's private letters and diaries out of the public eye , a tribunal was told on Monday. Andrew Lownie, the author and historian battling to gain unrestricted access to the archive , said it was "shameful" that it had not been made available to the public in its entirety, 11 years after it was saved for the nation. He said the documents were "crucial" to biographers and historians but that the case had also raised "very important issues of transparency and abuse of power". Mr Lownie has spent four years fighting the Cabinet Office and the University of Southampton, which bought the archive in 2010 using £2.8 million of public money, for full sight of the documents . In 2019, the Information Commissioner found in his favour and ordered the release of the entire collection of 4,500 boxes of documents and photographs – known as the Broadlands Archive archive – but the Cabinet Office appealed and has continued … [Read more...] about Cabinet Office accused of lying to MPs to keep Mountbatten papers private
Prince Harry: I see my mother’s legacy when I look at my own children
The Duke of Sussex has described how he sees his late mother’s legacy when he looks at his own two children every day. He revealed that not a day goes by when he does not think about the mark Diana, Princess of Wales , left on both him and his brother, the Duke of Cambridge. “My mother instilled in me a drive to speak up and fight for a better world,” he said. “And now, as a husband and parent, my mother’s voice is even stronger in my life.” The Duke, 37, recorded a video message to open this year’s Diana Award ceremony, which took place virtually on what would have been the Princess’s 61st birthday, marking the 25th anniversary of her death. He said it was a “special year” and one in which he hoped people would take extra time to “not just remember how she lived but to reflect on the life she continues to lead through so many”. The award is the only charity bearing the Princess’s name and honours young people aged nine to 25 who work to improve the lives of others. ‘My … [Read more...] about Prince Harry: I see my mother’s legacy when I look at my own children
Clearly, we’ve expected too much of Boris Johnson on the Chris Pincher scandal
Where do they think it’s going to end, all this? What do they, by which I mean all of the other members of the government, think is going to be the outcome for them? Johnson is finished, they must know that. And yet, on they all go, day after day, week after week, publicly humiliating themselves in defence of a man who they must surely know would never, ever do the same for them, and from whom no good, now, is ever going to come? Dominic Raab does not come across as a man who, in his private moments, has an especially deep reservoir of Zen-like calm to call upon. What is he saying to himself, to his friends? What are the voices in his head shouting at him when he gets to the end of yet another agonising humiliation on the TV channels and radio stations, doing his level best to style out the absurd lies of a man who, he must surely know by now, is not telling him the truth? Even by Raab’s incomparably low standards, Tuesday morning’s efforts were off-the-scale … [Read more...] about Clearly, we’ve expected too much of Boris Johnson on the Chris Pincher scandal
Marjorie Taylor Greene pushes link between medication and mass shootings
Marjorie Taylor Greene has suggested—without evidence—a link between shootings and medication, following mass shooting in Highland Park, Chicago, on July 4. Representative Greene, the Republican from Georgia, on Monday tweeted an FBI wanted poster for Robert E. Crimo III , the 22-year-old named a "person of interest" over the shootings at a Fourth of July parade that left at least six dead and 30 injured. Crimo was arrested later that day. "Is this going to be another story where some crazy manifesto will be found? Greene wrote. "Are we going to be told every 'weapon of war' and amount of ammo he bought yet the public won't be told his prescription drug history or recreational drug history." Police have released limited information about Crimo, who had not been charged early morning Tuesday. His potential use of medication is not known. "When are we going to have an honest conversation about drug abuse, mental illness, and SSRI's??? And deadly side effects." Greene asked … [Read more...] about Marjorie Taylor Greene pushes link between medication and mass shootings
Police fired after racist Meghan Markle meme among “vile” WhatsApp posts
Two police officers in the U.K. have been dismissed over "inexcusable" WhatsApp messages—including one that compared Meghan Markle to a racist toy. PC Sukhdev Jeer and PC Paul Hefford were fired from the Metropolitan Police 's Forensic Services, while allegations were also proven against former PC Richard Hammond. The trio had shared "vile" messages on a WhatsApp group called "But They Promised," including one sent shortly before Meghan and Prince Harry 's May 2018 wedding. The meme was of a "golliwog," a toy that is among the most famous racist caricatures in Britain . It was captioned: "A sneak preview at Meghan's wedding dress." Commander Jon Savell, of Professional Standards at the Metropolitan Police, said in a statement: "These vile messages were shared in 2018 within a closed WhatsApp group between a small group of officers. "I hardly need to say it is completely unacceptable for anyone, let alone a police officer, to behave in such a manner. The actions of … [Read more...] about Police fired after racist Meghan Markle meme among “vile” WhatsApp posts
Charles, Camilla hire executive from Daily Mail Group Meghan and Harry sued
Prince Charles and Camilla are hiring a Daily Mail deputy editor to run their media operation—despite Meghan Markle and Prince Harry suing the newspaper's publisher three times. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are hiring Tobyn Andreae, deputy editor of the Daily Mail , as communications secretary to replace Simon Enright, according to The Sunday Times . Meghan won privacy and copyright damages after the brand's Sunday edition, The Mail on Sunday, printed a letter she sent her father, with the three-year saga finally ending at the Court of Appeal in December 2021. At the time, Meghan said: "These harmful practices don't happen once in a blue moon—they are a daily fail that divide us, and we all deserve better." "Daily Fail" is a common nickname in Britain among detractors which is applied to both the daily and Sunday editions of the U.K. newspaper. Prince Harry has also sued The Mail on Sunday twice, with his latest lawsuit still ongoing . … [Read more...] about Charles, Camilla hire executive from Daily Mail Group Meghan and Harry sued
