Are you extremely upset, guilt-ridden, embarrassed or fuming? No, I’m not talking about your reaction to the political mess over Brexit. All these undesirable emotions feature in a new app developed by psychologists at Staffordshire University . It’s called Smarter Thinking 2. I’ve no idea if there was ever a Smarter Thinking 1, but the new title is the mental equivalent of turning up the volume control to 11. Eat your heart out Spinal Tap. The step-by-step techniques have already been tested on elite athletes, business leaders and military figures, who have used them to improve their performance. Now Associate Professor Martin Turner and his colleagues are encouraging the general public to download the app (for free) and try out the approach themselves. It’s based on something called rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT), which gets people to challenge their irrational and negative thoughts so they can deal with tricky situations. Being a walking worry bead … [Read more...] about Could this Staffordshire University app help MPs solve the Brexit dilemma?

Almost 40 per cent of students applying to Staffordshire University last year were told they could receive an unconditional offer if they picked it as their top choice. It was among a growing number of universities to adopt these tactics amid fierce competition to fill degree places. The explosion in unconditional offers meant a third of UK applicants received them in 2018. But today, Staffordshire University revealed it has overhauled its admissions procedures. In future, students will be told at the outset if their offer is unconditional, so it won’t hinge on whether they select it as their ‘firm’ university. Newly released figures show 535 applicants – 11.2 per cent – were given an unconditional offer to study there in September 2018. Yet 39.1 per cent of students had the chance to convert their conditional offer –dependent on achieving certain grades - into an unconditional one if they named Staffordshire as their top pick. It meant they no … [Read more...] about Staffordshire University announces overhaul after unconditional offers soar
Hands up who thinks they know how to improve classroom standards just because they once went to school themselves. Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of acting like armchair experts. Whether it’s sorting out bad pupil behaviour or deciding which subjects should be taught, most of us have an opinion. The same principle applies to universities. Those of us with degrees tend to view campus life through the prism of our own student days. But what if our views are hopelessly outdated? Take the popular perception that students ‘go away’ to university. In fact, one in four undergraduates now live at home and travel to lectures. They have a very different experience to those who stay in halls, like I did. Now a new report – compiled by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) – has called for a raft of changes to help these so-called ‘commuter’ students. The findings have been backed by Staffordshire University , which is used as a case … [Read more...] about Staffordshire University in top 20 for ‘commuter’ students
