Many in New Zealand's film and television industry and the academic world are mourning the death of Dr Geoff Lealand, one of the world’s foremost authorities on both the small and big screens. Lealand, who died suddenly on Saturday morning aged 75, was for many years a familiar figure in the screen and media department at Waikato University, which he joined in 1992. He became renowned through his research, much of which was focussed on how children view and understand television. “He thought children should not be patronised in terms of their understanding of the things they watch,” longtime colleague Ann Hardy said. James O'Rourke choked 30-year-old Dean Ramsey to death in what a judge described as a "brutal execution". The 52-year-old, who was jailed for life in 1992, was sentenced to another 23 years at the High Court in Glasgow. His lawyer said that "by tendering the guilty plea, he is committing himself to spending the rest of his life in custody". The court heard how O'Rourke, who has been convicted of a string of offences behind bars, was seen shaking hands with other prisoners at HMP Glenochil in Clackmannanshire after the attack on 9 January 2021. Witnesses recall fatal attack on Outlaws leader outside his gang pad
Multiple witnesses have described the bloodied and brutal attack of senior Outlaws gang figure Peter Lui, who died after being assaulted and robbed of his patch by two rival gang members. A trial at the High Court at Napier began on Monday, where Hemi Rapata Meihana Cahill, 30, pleaded not guilty to charges of being party to Lui’s murder and assaulting him with a car – a Holden Calais. He pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated robbery relating to the theft of the long-time Outlaws member’s motorcycle club patch. A courier driver told the court he was following behind Lui’s motorbike and the maroon coloured Holden the day of the attack outside the gang pad on Mersey St on March 29 last year. In 1962, he was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison after he was convicted of kidnapping and child molestation charges. ‘Sadist’ internet troll admits posting ‘sick’ comments about dead people on Facebook
A "sadist" internet troll has admitted posting offensive material on Facebook about young people who died. Paul Hind, 38, called Olivia Burt, a Durham University student who died from head injuries outside a nightclub, a "sex worker" and "prostitute". He also doctored an image of Ms Burt and posted pictures of children who were "clearly terminally ill" on her Facebook page, South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court heard. Hind, from Wark, Northumberland, admitted four separate offences of conveying false information which was indecent or grossly offensive in relation to four dead people. Ms Burt's father, Nigel, said Hind's actions were a "desecration" of his 20-year-old daughter's memory.
