Barry Hearn’s four words that encouraged him to invest in darts and change the sport forever
Barry Hearn has recounted the moment which inspired him to transform darts into the sporting juggernaut it is today. It’s more than 20 years since the sports promoter took control of the PDC, with the governing body and the game in general flourishing and becoming more lucrative over the last two decades. Players from Phil Taylor to Michael van Gerwen have become household names, while fans watch in their millions at home and in their thousands at arenas nationwide. The PDC moved its World Championship away from the legendary but cramped Circus Tavern to the Alexandra Palace, a move which has paid off handsomely since the switch in 2008. And it was a visit to the Circus Tavern in Purfleet which convinced Hearn he had to get involved in the sport. Speaking on the Gary Newbon Sports Show with Jewson, Hearn said: “I walked into the Circus Tavern to watch the old world championships. The people that ran the game were trying to get me involved to handle some of their … [Read more...] about Barry Hearn’s four words that encouraged him to invest in darts and change the sport forever

Rory McIlroy has described this year’s PGA Championship as ‘one that got away’ as he seeks to end his eight-year wait to win another major. The Northern Irishman was leading the field at Southern Hills last week after the first round with a five-under-par 65. However, a topsy-turvy performance over the next three days saw McIlroy fall out of contention before eventually finishing in tied-eighth place. The 33-year-old has not won a major since 2014 and did not speak to reporters after his third and fourth round at Southern Hills last week. In an interview with the Irish Independent , he said: ‘Regrets? Yeah I regret I didn’t take advantage of the benign conditions on Friday afternoon. ‘I regret the big numbers I made on the par threes on Saturday. The fact that I just needed to play the last 13 holes in one-under par to make a play-off on Sunday, and I didn’t. ‘So, yeah, I definitely feel like it was one that got away. But, again, I have to take the positives and … [Read more...] about Rory McIlroy describes this year’s PGA Championship as ‘one that got away’
