Leading Conservatives taking to the airwaves since the Chris Pincher scandal have been repeatedly quizzed on what the Prime Minister knew and Number 10’s response to the crisis . Here is what each minister said: Friday, July 1: Simon Hart, Welsh Secretary Simon Hart did the morning media rounds for the Government and was unable to confirm whether the alleged assault was being formally investigated . He said it was "early days yet" and that from the perspective of the alleged victims, it could be "counter-productive" to rush any probe. He said the Chief Whip would be having "conversations" throughout the day and that "we might be having a very different conversation as the day goes on". He told Sky News: "This makes me very sad, it makes me sad for everybody who's been involved in these things. It's clearly something which has gone terribly wrong. There is a process, I think it's important that the process is followed. “I think it is entirely right that the Chief Whip … [Read more...] about The ministers wheeled out to respond to Chris Pincher scandal and what they said

The most famous story about modern presidential campaigning now has a quaint old-world tone. It’s about the showdown between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in the first debate of their 1960 campaign, which was also the very first nationally televised general-election debate in the United States. The story is that Kennedy looked great, which is true, and Nixon looked terrible, which is also true—and that this visual difference had an unexpected electoral effect. As Theodore H. White described it in his hugely influential book The Making of the President 1960 , which has set the model for campaign coverage ever since, “sample surveys” after the debate found that people who had only heard Kennedy and Nixon talking, over the radio, thought that the debate had been a tie. But those who saw the two men on television were much more likely to think that Kennedy—handsome, tanned, non-sweaty, poised—had won. Historians who have followed up on this story haven’t found data to back … [Read more...] about When Donald Meets Hillary: Who Will Win the Debates?
S ometime around 2010, about two-thirds of the way through his 13 years at the helm of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)—the world’s largest mental-health research institution—Tom Insel started speaking with unusual frankness about how both psychiatry and his own institute were failing to help the mentally ill. Insel, runner-trim, quietly alert, and constitutionally diplomatic, did not rant about this. It’s not in him. You won’t hear him trash-talk colleagues or critics. Listen to the audio version of this article: Feature stories, read aloud: download the Audm app for your iPhone. Yet within the bounds of his unbroken civility, Insel began voicing something between a regret and an indictment. In writings and public talks, he lamented the pharmaceutical industry’s failure to develop effective new drugs for depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia; academic psychiatry’s overly cozy relationship with Big Pharma; and the paucity of treatments produced by the … [Read more...] about The Smartphone Psychiatrist
A delegation of Cabinet ministers are set to meet Boris Johnson at No10 as he heads out of a car crash Liaison Committee meeting this evening to tell him to go. 'Men in grey suits' Welsh Secretary Simon Hart, grim-faced Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis are set to tell the Prime Minister he had lost the confidence of his party. The revelation the PM knew about claims against “grope” accused MP Chris Pincher, then promoted him, then “forgot” he’d been told, was the last straw for many MPs. Chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid led the way yesterday for a wave of Tory resignations . The doomed PM has seen dozens of his own MPs quit in 24 hours, including ministers, parliamentary private secretaries and trade envoys. Meanwhile, Tories have discussed changing the rules of no confidence votes - to force the PM out as soon as next week if he opts to squat in No10. In a day of feverish drama at Westminster the … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson leadership LIVE: Cabinet members queue up to tell PM he must quit
By Lauren Turner Published 26 October 2020 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing It's the start of half-term week, and Lucy is making pancakes for her two children for breakfast. But these are made with water, as she doesn't have any milk left. The eggs are from the chickens in her garden. And she is wondering what else she will feed her children until they go back to school. Lucy Houghton, 36, usually relies on the free school meals her children are entitled to and had vouchers over summer to spend in a supermarket for their food. But now it's half-term, and MPs have voted against the vouchers being continued through the half-term and Christmas holidays. "I know it's only a few pounds to some people - it's an expensive coffee and a muffin in London - but it can make the difference between my children eating or not," she says. "It's going to be tough this week." She's … [Read more...] about School meals: The mum trying to feed her children through half-term week
By Caroline Lowbridge Published 28 December 2014 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Thousands of people have had sexually explicit photos and videos of themselves published on the internet without their consent. So why have only a small number of revenge porn perpetrators been prosecuted, and how is the law catching up with them? While the term "revenge porn" is new, the concept of distributing sexual images of a former partner is not. Before the internet, photos or homemade sex tapes were posted through the doors of friends and relatives. And there have been reports of vengeful exes submitting photos to pornographic magazines since at least the 1980s. Numerous celebrities have also had sex tapes released by former partners without their permission. But campaigners say there has been an explosion in revenge porn over the past few years, largely because of the impact of … [Read more...] about Is revenge porn already illegal in England?
Boris Johnson ’s government has continued to slowly fall apart as a growing number of ministers head for the door. A wave of resignations was triggered when health secretary Sajid Javid left the Cabinet last night over the handling of the Chris Pincher groping scandal. Minutes later, chancellor Rishi Sunak walked, two moves which threatened to bring down the government entirely. Outrage is growing over Johnson’s admission that he knew about a sexual assault allegation when he promoted him to deputy chief whip. No 10 changed its line a few times – initially saying the PM wasn’t aware of the claims, then saying they were either ‘resolved’ or ‘did not progress to a formal complaint’. But then, a former top Foreign Office diplomat Simon McDonald revealed that complaints made about Pincher’s behaviour in 2019 were indeed made at an official level. Since then, there has been a steady drip of resignations from government, including from solicitor general Alex Chalk and … [Read more...] about Slow motion collapse of Boris’s government continues as more ministers quit
Shameless Boris Johnson was clinging desperately to power tonight after a humiliating 24 hours and a dramatic collapse in Tory support. Conservative MPs were aghast that the Prime Minister told his Cabinet that he was staying put to go after they tried to oust him. But with his leadership drawing to a close, he was holed up in Downing Street despite the Tory Party’s ‘men in grey suits’ saying his time was up. A delegation of Cabinet ministers went to No 10 tonight, including newly appointed Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi , Home Secretary Priti Patel and chief whip Chris Heaton-Harris. In an extraordinary stand-off, they threatened to resign unless Mr Johnson agreed to finally stand down. Priti Patel also urged Boris Johnson to quit ( Image: AFP via Getty Images) Cabinet minister Michael Gove , who famously torpedoed Mr Johnson’s first Tory leadership bid, had earlier urged him to stand down. But a defiant Mr Johnson insisted he would “smash on” in No 10 … [Read more...] about Government in meltdown as shameless PM vows to stay after top Tories urge him to quit
Lewis Hamilton said his fans are still carrying the pain of last season’s championship defeat after Max Verstappen was subjected to a chorus of boos ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix . Hamilton will line up in fifth place at Silverstone , three spots behind Verstappen. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took advantage of the damp conditions to secure his maiden pole in his 150th Formula One appearance. Nearly seven months have passed since the deeply controversial season-ending round in Abu Dhabi where Hamilton was denied a record eighth world championship. But emotions are still raw for his legion of supporters. As Verstappen emerged from his Red Bull and stepped forward to conduct his post-qualifying interview – reserved for the top-three drivers – he was subjected to a hostile reception. We tend to stash away our sex toys and lube in dedicated drawers or secret sex boxes. That’s about to change with sexual wellness brand Maude , which launches in the UK this month. If you’re buying vibrators or dildos from this label, you’ll want to have them on display – they so perfectly fit that sleek, neutral interiors aesthetic everyone on Instagram and TikTok loves right now that we’re tempted to use them as coffee table sculptures. The toys deliver on more than just looks, of course, but as an intro to Maude, that’s not a bad place to start. Maude is not, as you might be imagining, a vanity project from a famous Maude, but it does have celeb credentials. The sexual wellness brand launched back in 2018, with the aim of creative beautiful, well-designed sex products built on quality, simplicity, and inclusivity, but in 2020, Dakota Johnson (yep, the actress who played the lead in 50 Shades Of Grey, so she knows her stuff) joined the team as an investor … [Read more...] about Meet Maude, the Dakota Johnson backed sex toy brand that’s now in the UK
