UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor on Thursday presents her report on the situation of human rights defenders. " Hundreds of Human Rights Defenders are being killed every year , and there is little sign that this is going to stop. We also know that many of these murders are signaled in advance with threats," the Special Rapporteur told DW. Those threats can be direct or indirect, targeted at individuals or more general, according to the report. They "are often intended to intimidate, silence and stop human rights defenders from carrying out their work. There is no more direct attack on civil society space than the killing of human rights defenders," the report reads. Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders According to the Special Rapporteur, the problem is "widespread." Since 2015, a total of 1,323 human rights defenders have been killed and at least 281 were killed in 2019 alone, the Office of the United Nations High … [Read more...] about Killings of human rights defenders ‘go largely unnoticed by outside world’

Germany to implement supply chain law against exploitation
Germany on Wednesday took a step towards forcing companies to take responsibility for any labor or environmental abuses in their global supply chain. A new law (Lieferkettengesetz in German) allows for hefty fines starting at several hundred thousand euros if their contractors abroad are found to breach human rights or environmental rules. The fines go up to two percent of the company's annual revenues if they exceed 400 million euros ($484 million). The companies are held responsible for every step of the way: from the raw materials to the finished product. "This law protects workers from exploitation across sprawling supply chains and protects human rights across the world," Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said on Wednesday, adding "In future, it will be clear that 'Made in Germany' also means respect for human rights." The SPD-run development and labor ministries initially wanted the law to also target smaller companies, but backed down in the face of strong opposition from the … [Read more...] about Germany to implement supply chain law against exploitation

Millions of children are facing a "catastrophic education emergency" as coronavirus lockdowns have closed schools worldwide , the UN's main organization for children said on Wednesday. UNICEF said schools for more than 168 million children in 14 countries had been completely shut for almost an entire year because of the pandemic. It warned that 214 million children globally — or 1 in 7 — had missed more than three-quarters of their in-person learning since March 2020. UNICEF chief Henrietta Fore said pupils were paying the heaviest price "As we approach the one-year mark of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are again reminded of the catastrophic education emergency worldwide lockdowns have created," UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said. "With every day that goes by, children unable to access in-person schooling fall further and further behind, with the most marginalized paying the heaviest price," she said. "No effort should be spared to keep schools open, or … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: UN warns of ‘catastrophic education emergency’

IPL hair removal technology, that's portable and easy to use at home, is going from strength to strength. The best IPL hair removal machines can get rid of unwanted hairs by targeting the hair follicle directly and using intense pulsed light flashes to help minimise hair growth. While laser hair removal in a salon can cost upwards of £50 a session, and typically requires several sessions, at home IPL machines start at around £250, although you can find cheaper models for less than £150. Top-rated devices like the Philips Lumea Prestige have converts who love the convenience, cost-effectiveness and results of at-home IPL. In fact, 92 per cent of users noticed a reduction in the amount of hair after three treatments. While handheld IPL hair removal machines don't stop hair growth entirely, they do slow the process down significantly. However, you need to be consistent and use your IPL device regularly over the course of several months. Not everyone will see the same results … [Read more...] about 9 Best IPL Hair Removal Machines 2021 – from Philips Lumea to Silk’n Infinity get the best products for smoother skin
