Councils will be barred from erasing historical street names if residents object under new legislation. The Government will announce laws on Tuesday which seeks to prevent Labour and Liberal Democrat councils from unilaterally changing street names by giving residents the right to vote on changes. Under the plans, the residents will be able to vote on proposed changes and if one-third of them object, the name will remain the same. The plan will be a part of the forthcoming Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill which is currently at committee stage in the Commons. The reports did not confirm whether a specific turnout would be needed to trigger the objection. F1 22 speeds straight to UK number one – Games charts 2 July
With no other new entries to get in the way, EA’s new Formula One game has taken pole position in the latest UK top 10. This continues to be one of the worst summers ever for major new video game releases but the yearly launch of the latest F1 game has been at least one highlight, in terms of both sales and critical reception . The new game had no trouble debuting at number one, with 71% of sales going to the PlayStation versions. Although, as a general rule, Xbox owners tend to buy games digitally more than their PlayStation counterparts. There were no other new entries in the top 40, with the release of Monster Hunter Rise expansion Sunbreak failing to have any significant impact on the parent game’s sales – even though there is a retail bundle as well. Brace for more pain ahead after a plunge in sterling
At Rakusen’s, one of Britain’s oldest cracker businesses, there are certain things that simply cannot be changed. “We have to run the ovens to cook the biscuits,” joint owner and managing director Andrew Simpson says. “And we can’t just put less wheat in all our crackers.” There, like every other food business in Britain, costs of energy and ingredients have proved a particular burden in recent months. Yet, Simpson says there has been another factor which has piled further pain on businesses. “All of our major commodities inputs are priced in dollars or affected by the value of the dollar,” he says. “Inevitably, the devaluation of the pound puts cost into the business.” For Rakusen’s, even buying locally does not solve the issue. Its wheat is grown in the north of England and is bought from a flour mill 30 miles down the road. But, Simpson says, “it’s effectively priced in dollars”. “The grain is a global commodity. And if we're not prepared to pay a competitive price for it, … [Read more...] about Brace for more pain ahead after a plunge in sterling
PlayStation wants to make new emulators – hopefully includes PS3
With any luck, Sony ’s plans to build new emulators for its retro games means you won’t need to cloud stream old PS3 titles on PS5 . One of the big selling points of PlayStation Plus ’ new Premium tier is access to a library of retro games from previous PlayStation consoles. There are already several fan favourite PlayStation 1 and 2 games available and, while its an admittedly small line-up, the library is bound to improve as more games are added to it. The downside is that PlayStation 3 games can only be played via cloud streaming, since the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 aren’t able to properly emulate them. However, there may be signs that Sony plans to rectify this in the future. A newly posted job listing for a software development engineer at Sony states that the chosen candidate will work on ‘the Tools and Technology team at PlayStation Studios to support the newly relaunched ‘Classics’ for PS4 and PS5.’ The listing also mentions adding new … [Read more...] about PlayStation wants to make new emulators – hopefully includes PS3

Queen could strip cheese company of royal warrant over £1.5m pollution fine
The Queen could revoke a royal warrant for her favourite cheddar cheese after the dairy company received a £1.5 million river fine for polluting a river. Royal warrants are issued to favoured suppliers to the monarch , and the honour is held by the Davidstow Creamery in Cornwall, which was last week fined by the Environment Agency for discharging waste into the nearby river Iffy. The Queen could strip the warrant from the cheddar producer, it is understood, following the waste discharges which killed fish and afflicted nearby residents with an “eggy” odour. Buckingham Palace sources have indicated that all suppliers are expected to adhere to environmental standards, and that warrants are constantly reviewed and can be revoked at any time. Warrants are currently held by major suppliers favoured by the Royal family , including Bollinger, Fortnum and Mason, Jaguar Land Rover, and Waitrose. Warning to millions of people on Universal Credit as £650 cost of living payment WON’T hit bank accounts in one go
MILLIONS of people on Universal Credit won't get the £650 cost of living payment all at once. Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the extra cash would be dished out as part of a £15billion emergency package for low income households. More than eight million households will receive the help, which will be paid in two instalments. The first instalment is worth £326 and will land in bank accounts from 14 July - payments will be staggered from there. But the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) say applicants may not receive money at the same time. The DWP say it's because there are millions of payments that need to go out and they can't all be processed on a single day.
