School return explained: New rules on testing and masks – as pupils face longer days

· March 8, 2021 ·

England’s 8million state school pupils are today flooding back to full classes for the first time since December. In the national lockdown, only vulnerable or key workers’ children could attend in person with the rest learning at home. Now all schools are opening to all pupils in the same week in Step One of Boris Johnson ’s roadmap out of lockdown. Secondary pupils will get twice-a-week tests and be told to wear face masks in the classroom to slow the spread. But worried unions had wanted a phased reopening amid fears it could lead to a rise of Covid rates in the community. Ministers insist the reopening will be “irreversible”, even if the R number goes above 1. But local closures could still spring into action if there’s a local spike. Here’s what you need to know. Which schools are going back when? All state schools in England are being told to welcome back all pupils from today, Monday 8 March. For primary schools, this should mean all pupils return to … [Read more...] about School return explained: New rules on testing and masks – as pupils face longer days

Greek holiday warning to Brits – book trips on ‘smaller islands’ as they are prioritised for vaccine rollout

· March 8, 2021 ·

FAMILIES booking a holiday to Greece this summer are being urged to opt for the smaller islands - as they will be getting the vaccine first. Seven per cent of the Greek population have been given the first dose of the Covid vaccine, compared to the UK's 32 per cent. However, Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits, with tour operators including TUI and Jet2 seeing a huge booking boom for the country. The country's tourism minister Harry Theoharis has said that they are prioritising the smaller islands with fewer than 1,000 residents for the vaccine first. He told the Telegraph : "We’re vaccinating everyone on islands that have a population of less than 1,000 inhabitants.” “If you’re going to send a medical team to an island with a small population, it makes sense to vaccinate not just the elderly and vulnerable, but everyone." These sea slugs sever their own heads and regenerate new bodies

· March 8, 2021 ·

Starfish can regenerate their arms, salamanders are able to grow new tails, and axolotls re-form their spinal cords - but scientists have found sea slugs that can grow a whole new body. Researchers discovered two species of sea slug that can grow bodies complete with a heart and other internal organs while observing them for other studies. One of the creatures was seen moving around without its body on one occasion, and another was seen doing the same thing twice. The head moved on its own immediately after being separated from the body - and within just days the wound at the back of the head had closed, according to the study published in peer-reviewed journal, Current Biology. The report also found the heads of young sea slugs started to feed on algae within hours of detachment, and they started regenerating a heart within a week, while the heads of older individuals died in about 10 days.
