· February 26, 2021 ·

The final anti-HS2 activist from a group who had spent at least a month underground in a network of tunnels has been removed. As the man, known as Bradley, emerged from the site under London's Euston Square Gardens and was transferred to an ambulance, he raised two fingers in a peace/victory sign. A crowd gathered nearby cheered and shouted "we love you Bradley". Dad, 29, ‘unlawfully killed’ when he was restrained face-down on pavement at railway station

· February 27, 2021 ·

A YOUNG dad was unlawfully killed when he was restrained face-down on the pavement following a row at a railway station, an inquest has heard. Staff on the Metrolink in Manchester used excessive force as they gripped Jack Barnes, 29, by the neck, Manchester Coroner's Court was told. The dad-of-one, from Hull, was held on the ground by four "customer service representatives" monitoring anti-social behaviour on the tram system at Manchester Victoria. He repeatedly said he could not breathe as he lay on the pavement after being chased for 1,000 metres on the evening of October 11, 2016, the court heard. One of the four men, a former cop, took over the restraint position at one point and gripped Mr Barnes's neck and held his left arm behind his back as well as putting pressure on his back. From bodycam footage worn by a colleague the ex policeman was heard to say: "We're gonna put you out pal. You're all right". He then later added: "Right, if you struggle I will put … [Read more...] about Dad, 29, ‘unlawfully killed’ when he was restrained face-down on pavement at railway station

Eco-warrior Swampy among three activists to leave HS2 protest site – with one still underground

· February 26, 2021 ·

ECO-warrior Swampy was among three activists to leave an HS2 protest site yesterday — but one remains underground. Blue Sandford, 18 — the daughter of Scottish millionaire Roc Sandford — and an unnamed woman, 22, also left with Swampy , aka Dan Hooper, 48. The trio were taken to hospital as a precaution before being arrested. A network of tunnels was created in secret near London’s Euston station by HS2 Rebellion. Fellow activists protesting against the high-speed rail link said the trio are “well” and in “high spirits”. TOM UTLEY: My plea for the future? We see the back of hideously vain Zoom poseurs like Grant Shapps

· February 26, 2021 ·

Day 340 of the social distancing measures and I am ready to announce a clear winner of my award for the Most Annoying Zoom Background of Lockdown . A roll on the drums, please, for that bumptious self-promoter Grant Shapps , whose survival in ministerial office is one of the enduring mysteries of modern politics. (He’s now the Transport Secretary, if you’re wondering, entrusted with the nation’s hopes of regaining the right to a foreign holiday sometime before the crack of doom.) Heaven knows, I try to be charitable in this column. But I defy even the kindest-hearted among us to look at the elaborately staged background to Mr Shapps’s Zoom appearances from his home without thinking: ‘Goodness, what a twerp!’ Grant Shapps, pictured, appeared on Robert Peston's ITV show with the British Civil Air Ensign emblazoned with the Union Flag, draped as usual from a floor-standing flagpole Take Wednesday night, when he appeared via Zoom on Robert Peston’s ITV show. There he … [Read more...] about TOM UTLEY: My plea for the future? We see the back of hideously vain Zoom poseurs like Grant Shapps

Coronavirus: Want to avoid busy train services? This tool will be able to help

· June 5, 2020 ·

A new warning system will allow train passengers to avoid busy services - increasing the chance of them being able to follow social distancing measures. From today, National Rail will begin displaying red or yellow warning triangles on its app and website next to services that are expected to be in high demand. The system will use journey planning trends analysis and messages from rail staff at stations and on trains to determine how busy services will be. Users will also be asked to notify National Rail about which particular service they intend to take. It is hoped the system will mean more people staggering their journeys as demand increases with coronavirus lockdown restrictions easing. Advertisement Passengers can be kept updated about disruption and overcrowding on their journey and receive alternative travel options. Alerts will be received via Facebook Messenger at first, with text message and WhatsApp updates available in the … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Want to avoid busy train services? This tool will be able to help
