Homes, streets and stations under water as thunderstorms lash parts of Britain
Floods have left homes, businesses and streets under water in parts of the UK, as thunderstorms continue to batter the country. Thunderstorms continue around the country, and downpours caused flooding inside London's Victoria Station and outside King's Cross Station, with videos showing cars and buses driving through huge puddles. Network Rail said: "Not long after 3pm this afternoon, station colleagues at London Victoria noticed flooding at the main entrance due to heavy rainfall, with large volumes of water running down the slope leading towards the eastern concourse. "Some retail units and platforms had to be closed." An amber thunderstorm warning covering most of the southeast of England, including parts of London, was in place until 10pm, warning people that they should expect flooding and disruption. The warning said: "Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life." The Met Office said flooding is likely to affect homes and businesses … [Read more...] about Homes, streets and stations under water as thunderstorms lash parts of Britain
Sewage hits dozens of beaches after torrential downpours
Swimmers have been told to avoid more than 40 beaches and bathing spots around the UK after heavy rain overwhelmed sewer systems. Various beauty spots have been hit by ‘storm sewage’, reigniting questions about how sewage can be allowed to get into public waters – and anger at water companies. Pollution warnings were put in place across England and Wales after downpours hit the country following months of little to no rain. The south west and south coast of England were the worst affected, according to data gathered by environmental campaign group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). Swimmers are advised against bathing at nine beaches in Sussex, seven in Cornwall, five in Dorset, four in Devon, three on the Isle of Wight and three in Essex. Warnings have also been put in place in Lincolnshire, Cumbria, Lancashire and South Wales, as well as two inland wild swimming spots near Bristol and Minehead in Somerset. On Tuesday, there was an alert at Spittal near Berwick in … [Read more...] about Sewage hits dozens of beaches after torrential downpours
Ofwat boss accused of not getting tough on leak targets
The boss of Ofwat has been accused of acting as an “apologist” for water firms as it emerged the regulator barely toughened leak targets in more than a decade. Leaks across the sector have not fallen significantly since 2002 even though water companies have mostly hit their targets, it emerged on Tuesday, despite David Black, the water regulator’s chief executive, arguing it had been rigorous in holding companies to account . Between 1994 and 2001, the volume of leaks dropped from five billion litres a day to around 3.3 billion. But since then, it has dropped down to only 3.1 billion. During that period, water companies have largely stayed within their targets, which until 2019 were set on a cost-benefit analysis of whether fixing leaks would cost more than the value of the water lost. Between 2007 and 2011, no targets on leaks were missed across all water companies in England and Wales. Mr Black joined Ofwat in 2012 and previously worked as the regulator’s director … [Read more...] about Ofwat boss accused of not getting tough on leak targets
Water boss challenged to drink sewage his company claims is mainly rainwater for £1,000
The CEO of a water company has been challenged to drink a glass of sewage discharge – with £1,000 at stake. Thunderstorms and rain spread across both England and Wales today amid a yellow weather warning. Homes and roads were hit hard by flooding, with central London brought to a standstill this afternoon. In the town of Totton in Hampshire, a pumping station had been ‘overwhelmed’ which led to a discharge, the BBC reported. Flooding came as pollution warnings were put in place at more than 40 beaches and swimming spots in England and Wales. The south west and south coast of England were the worst affected, according to data gathered by environmental campaign group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). Several discharges have been made since Monday, which Southern Water say protect both homes and businesses. But the company has said referring to the flooded liquid as ‘raw sewage’ is not accurate. Feargal Sharkey, former frontman of the Undertones, took to Twitter … [Read more...] about Water boss challenged to drink sewage his company claims is mainly rainwater for £1,000
