Will These Voters Decide the Republican Primary?
GOP presidential leaders Donald Trump and Ted Cruz may have their battle decided by voters at the intersection of their competing strengths: working-class Republicans who are also evangelical Christians. Those blue-collar culturally conservative voters represent a big share of the Republican electorate not only across the south but also in many Midwestern states. They also remain one of the most closely divided constituencies in the party, according to an array of recent polls provided to Next America . Trump underscored his determination to compete for evangelical support with a high-profile speech Monday at Liberty University, which was founded by the late Jerry Falwell Senior, a leading conservative Southern Baptist pastor who also played a key role in launching the Moral Majority in the late 1970s. Cruz, who runs best among evangelicals, is pursuing these voters through traditional means: by … [Read more...] about Will These Voters Decide the Republican Primary?

How a Telegenic Billionaire Rose to Become the Presumptive U.S. Presidential Republican Nominee
Donald Trump has emerged as the presumptive Republican U.S. presidential nominee by assembling a coalition that proved remarkably consistent across geographic lines—and ultimately showed more breadth than any of his rivals. From the primary campaign’s beginning to its effective end Tuesday night, Trump’s core strength remained his overwhelming advantage among several big groups in the GOP electorate, particularly whites without a college education and men. But Trump also displayed more ability to reach across the party than any of his rivals, particularly in the weeks after his early April defeat in Wisconsin. In one telling contrast, Trump consistently fared much better among evangelical Christians—who Ted Cruz considered the foundation of his coalition—than Cruz did among voters who are not evangelicals. Over the past month, Trump has posted his best performances not only among the groups that preferred him from the outset, but many of those that had resisted him, including … [Read more...] about How a Telegenic Billionaire Rose to Become the Presumptive U.S. Presidential Republican Nominee

Woman Allegedly Shot Husband In His Sleep And Left Fake Suicide Note In Order To Evade Capture, Daughter Says | The Daily Wire
A Missouri woman suspected of killing her husband allegedly shot him while he slept and penned a suicide note after she was released on bond to escape from authorities, her daughter has said. Dawn Renee Wynn, 49, is accused of shooting her husband, 51-year-old Harold Lee Wynn, in the back of his head on November 16, 2021, while he was asleep. Dawn was arrested, but posted bail and was supposed to be staying at her mother’s home in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, KOAM reported . She has been charged with the murder of Harold. Police told the outlet that Dawn disappeared from the home, leaving behind the note that her daughter, Savannah, described as a “suicide note.” Savannah told Law & Crime, however, that she believed the note was just a diversion to escape being held responsible for Harold’s death, saying her mother was a “coward” and “too selfish” to commit suicide. Savannah also told the outlet that Dawn was a danger to others. “She’s not someone that you need to trust,” … [Read more...] about Woman Allegedly Shot Husband In His Sleep And Left Fake Suicide Note In Order To Evade Capture, Daughter Says | The Daily Wire
Liz Cheney Already Has a 2024 Strategy
The defiant speech from Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming after her defeat in yesterday’s Republican primary could be reduced to a single message: This is round one. Cheney didn’t specify how, or where, she intends to continue her struggle against former President Donald Trump, after Harriet Hageman, the candidate Trump endorsed, routed her by more than two to one in the primary for Wyoming’s lone congressional seat. But Cheney dropped a big hint when she noted that the GOP’s Founding Father, Abraham Lincoln, lost elections for the House and Senate “before he won the most important election of all” by capturing the presidency. This morning, she went a step further, telling the Today show that she was “thinking about” joining the 2024 Republican presidential race . The magnitude of Cheney’s defeat yesterday underscores how strong Trump remains within the party, and how little chance a presidential candidacy based explicitly on repudiating him would have of capturing the … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney Already Has a 2024 Strategy
Rudy Giuliani did what he “had to do” during grand jury testimony: Lawyer
Rudy Giuliani and his lawyers were relatively speechless Wednesday upon leaving a Fulton County courthouse following six hours of questioning before a special grand jury about Georgia's 2020 election results. Donald Trump's former personal attorney was subpoenaed to testify following the June testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson , an aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, during a January 6 committee hearing. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the 23-person jury assembled in May has interviewed "dozens" of witnesses in association with Trump and confidants allegedly attempting to overturn Georgia's election numbers. "I can tell you that we were ordered to be here, we showed up, we did what we had to do," Bill Thomas, Giuliani's local attorney, said following the hearing . "The grand jury process is a secret process and we're going to respect that." The investigation kicked off in February 2021 at the hands of Fulton County District Attorney Fani … [Read more...] about Rudy Giuliani did what he “had to do” during grand jury testimony: Lawyer
Giuliani appears before Georgia grand jury investigating Trump election conduct
Rudy Giuliani is appearing Wednesday before a grand jury conducting a criminal investigation of the conduct of former President Donald Trump and some of his supporters following the 2020 election. Giuliani, who was Trump's personal attorney in 2020, is a target of the Fulton County probe examining whether the former president interfered in Georgia's 2020 elections, according to one of Giuliani's lawyers. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Judge Robert McBurney on Aug. 9 ordered Giuliani to make the trip to Atlanta "on train or a bus or Uber," after his attorneys sought to postpone the testimony, citing two notes written by a doctor advising Giuliani not to fly following an early-summer heart stent operation. Giuliani resides in New York City, where he was mayor from 1994 through 2001. Giuliani arrived at the Fulton County Courthouse on Wednesday at about 8:30, half an hour before his scheduled appearance. Asked about his method of travel to Atlanta, Giuliani replied, "I'll … [Read more...] about Giuliani appears before Georgia grand jury investigating Trump election conduct
‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find and was covered in crust’: An afternoon with Britain’s mudlarkers
“Help, it’s a big one.” I turn around quickly, hopeful for treasure, to see mudlarker Monika Buttling-Smith wrestling with a leech on her arm. She pulls it off in good humour and tosses it back into the still, cool water of the River Stour, in north-east Essex. For a second, I experience the surge of excitement that brings mudlarkers back to the foreshore and murky depths of UK streams, rivers and coastlines time and again. Mudlarking , the alluring practice – to some – of hunting through river mud for lost items of value or historical significance, has been around since the late eighteenth century. But the activity - now more of a hobby than a desperate way to earn money - is enjoying a boom in the current drought, as the lack of rain dries the land and causes the water levels of some non-tidal rivers to recede. This has been the driest eight-month spell since 1976 . A drought was declared across half of England on Friday and the source of the Thames has dried up to more … [Read more...] about ‘It’s a once-in-a-lifetime find and was covered in crust’: An afternoon with Britain’s mudlarkers
