Rupert Murdoch's Fox News has grown steadily to become one of the most influential right-wing media voices in the US ever since it first went on air on 7 October 1996. Known for its unabashed Republican bias, pro-Donald Trump rhetoric, blurring of fact and opinion, flashy graphics and pairing of stentorian middle-aged men with steely blondes, the channel caters expertly to white Middle America's anxieties and grievances about the state of the nation. The network recently altered its slogan to "Real news. Real honest opinion", replacing "Fair and balanced", an implicit criticism of its rivals it was having increasing trouble living up to. Power Grab Chinese electricity giant SGCC is trying again to buy a 20 percent stake in 50Hertz, one of Germany’s four grid operators. Berlin is worried and so are rivals. Published on May 22, 2018 12:00 pm Chinese state grid operator SGCC is making a fresh attempt to buy a 20 percent stake in German high-voltage energy network 50Hertz after a prior attempt failed in March, Handelsblatt learned. 50Hertz is one of Germany’s four high-voltage power network operators and the German government is getting increasingly jittery about the growth of state-sponsored Chinese investments in strategic industries such as power and telecoms. A 53-year-old former CIA officer has been charged with the unauthorized possession of classified American intelligence, and conspiring to commit espionage, according to the Justice Department. Jerry Chun Shing Lee has been charged for allegedly helping the Chinese government dismantle a US spy network after being asked by two Chinese intelligence officers in 2010 and 2011 to trade information for money. He lived in Hong Kong at the time. Mr Lee’s actions allegedly led to the imprisonment or killing of more than a dozen Chinese nationals who were helping the US, which the New York Times reported in January was “one of the most devastating intelligence setbacks for the agency in recent decades”. China’s attempt to gain political power and influence in foreign countries is “a new global battle”, Hillary Clinton has warned.
