German leaders rebel against Merkel’s strict lockdown and push ahead with easing restrictions amid woefully slow vaccine roll-out

· February 26, 2021 ·

Angela Merkel is facing a rebellion from regional leaders and voters over Germany 's call to extend lockdown restrictions following of a terrible start to the vaccine rollout. Several of the country's state leaders defied the Chancellor by allowing garden centres, florists and nail parlours to reopen from Monday. Mrs Merkel had pushed for an extension to current lockdown restrictions, warning the country faced a 'third wave' of coronavirus if rules were lifted too quickly. But Germany's government system means regional leaders have power over lockdowns. Even Bavarian leader Markus Söder, one of Mrs Merkel's staunchest supporters on the lockdown, is said to have moved away from her position. A majority of citizens are now reported to support easing restrictions. A survey by ZDF television found that 56 per cent supported such plans while only 41 per cent were opposed. Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders are expected to meet on March 3 to discuss a gradual … [Read more...] about German leaders rebel against Merkel’s strict lockdown and push ahead with easing restrictions amid woefully slow vaccine roll-out

Savvy mum saves £2,000 a year using yellow-sticker bargains to cook £1 gourmet meals

· February 27, 2021 ·

A thrifty mum has revealed how she manages to whip up gourmet meals at less than £1 a head by using yellow-sticker bargain items. Helen Rosbotham says she can save around £2,000 a year and is keen to share her experience to help others. The 43-year-old said she started money saving in her twenties, when she was a single mum to Freya, now 22, and Rose, 19. Living in social housing and reliant on income support, there were times when she struggled to afford food, and so she began shopping in the reduced aisle to keep costs down. Now, she has such an eye for a bargain that she scores her weekly shop for just £40 for her family of four - saving enough to buy a three-bedroom semi-detached home with her husband, bakery cook Steve, 48. She estimates that this saves her around £40 a week and roughly £2,000 over the year. What is your view? Have your say in the comments section She also enters competitions daily and has won a haul of goodies over the years including flights to … [Read more...] about Savvy mum saves £2,000 a year using yellow-sticker bargains to cook £1 gourmet meals

Shamima Begum still battling to be allowed back into Britain as she ‘plans to appeal ban’

· February 27, 2021 ·

ISIS bride Shamima Begum may be ready to mount a legal bid to overturn an appeals ban as she continues her quest to be allowed back into the UK. Begum was defeated yesterday in her legal battle to return for a court appeal over the stripping of her British citizenship — but Government sources understand her lawyers may try to challenge this. The highest court in the land yesterday delivered a stinging rebuke to the Court of Appeal, which last year cleared the way for Begum to come back to Britain after finding she was denied a "fair and effective appeal". But Lord Reed, the president of the Supreme Court, ruled the appeal process should be paused until Begum "is in a position to play an effective part in it without the safety of the public being compromised". This means Begum is set to languish in the fetid al-Roj camp under the guard of the Syrian Democratic Forces — who are said to ban contact with lawyers. However, the Telegraph reports Government sources fear she … [Read more...] about Shamima Begum still battling to be allowed back into Britain as she ‘plans to appeal ban’
