An animal rescuer is due to travel from South Africa to Ukraine this week to rescue nine lions from a zoo in a city that is under attack. Lionel De Lange is today preparing to travel to the war zone via Romania in a convoy of vehicles to save the pride from Russian fire as well as the possibility of starvation as funds for their upkeep run out. They will be temporarily relocated to a municipal zoo in Romania awaiting paperwork for relocation to a ‘forever home’ abroad, which could mean being flown out to Mr De Lange’s reserve in South Africa. The intention is to move the pride to the temporary holding facility over the border in Radauti, north-eastern Romania, where another two lions rescued since the outset of the Russian invasion are also awaiting relocation. One of the creatures, Simba, was driven to safety from close to the frontline in eastern Ukraine by two British humanitarian volunteers after they loaded him into the back of a van. Mr De Lange, who is … [Read more...] about Team making 12,000-mile trip to save nine lions from Ukraine

Mozambique Palma terror attack: ‘I can’t go back’
Published 10 April Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The town of Palma in northern Mozambique was the scene of a horrific attack by Islamist militants a year ago, which left dozens of people dead, forced thousands to flee their homes and put a massive nearby gas project on hold. BBC Africa correspondent Catherine Byaruhanga has been speaking to some of those who survived the assault to see what has changed. Fear still pervades Palma. Before the well co-ordinated assault began, the coastal town was packed and bustling - full of those who had come to find work in the area's burgeoning gas industry. It was also full of thousands of people who had fled violence in other areas of Cabo Delgado, the mainly Muslim province where an Islamist insurgency began in 2017. The militants are known locally as al-Shabab. They have no link to the Somali group of that name, but have since … [Read more...] about Mozambique Palma terror attack: ‘I can’t go back’
Mozambique crisis: Sex-slave freeing Rwandan soldiers greeted as heroes
By Anne Soy Published 6 October 2021 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Rotting fruit lies beneath mighty mango trees in northern Mozambique - an area empty of the people who would usually pick them. Over the last four years, many villages and towns in Cabo Delgado have been abandoned - but in the last month Islamist militants have been pushed back by a 1,000-strong contingent of Rwandan troops. Buildings lie in ruins, roofs caved in, evidence of shelling or blasts still visible. Walls falling apart and weeds growing right inside what were once human dwellings. I was among a group of journalists seeing, for the first time, the destruction left behind by some of the least known Islamist militants in the world. Locals referred to them by the Arabic name for youth - al-Shabab. But they have no connection to the better known group of the same name based in Somalia. They … [Read more...] about Mozambique crisis: Sex-slave freeing Rwandan soldiers greeted as heroes
