Solar storm expert warns of radiation that can damage dna and tech

The ‘ghostly’ sounds of auroras ‘popping’ can be heard after a solar storm, even if you can’t spot them in the night sky

May 17, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

THE eerie sounds of the Northern Lights can be heard even when they're invisible to the human eye, new research suggests. Popping, crackling, and even the sound of a rushing waterfall all describe the noises that come from auroras high in the sky. And now new research has found that these Northern lights sounds may take place even when we can't see the light show. Acoustic engineer Unto Laine from Aalto University in Finland proved this after recording the ghostly sounds – and on a night when no lights danced in the sky. Laine unveiled his finding at the EUROREGIO/BNAM2022 Joint Acoustics Conference in Denmark earlier this month. "This cancels the argument that auroral sounds are extremely rare and that the aurora borealis should be exceptionally bright and lively," Laine says. Laine and his fellow colleagues first recorded the strange sounds in 2012. They also found that the noises were coming from an altitude of about 230 to 330 feet – which is considered low. … [Read more...] about The ‘ghostly’ sounds of auroras ‘popping’ can be heard after a solar storm, even if you can’t spot them in the night sky

US is ‘not ready’ for a drone war with China as Washington has been ‘preoccupied’ with ISIS terror threat, expert warns

November 13, 2021 by www.thesun.co.uk

THE US is “not ready” for a potential drone war with China as Washington has been “preoccupied” with the "War on Terror" for decades, an expert says. Beijing is a “very sophisticated” drone power as it continues to "pour resources" into developing new technology, author and expert Seth Frantzman told The Sun. Meanwhile, the US had a “lot of privilege” after defeating the Soviet Union in the Cold War meaning no country could threaten its status as a global superpower. Frantzman said the US spent decades tinkering with systems and investing billions of technology in drones such as Reapers, Predators, and Global Hawks. He said: “There was no need for the US to invent. It happens when a country has a bit too much power or is privileged.” While China invested in its military, officials in Washington were preoccupied with the War on Terror, according to the author. Frantzman said: “A lot of people didn’t think that China was on the radar for a while. “No one imagined 10 … [Read more...] about US is ‘not ready’ for a drone war with China as Washington has been ‘preoccupied’ with ISIS terror threat, expert warns

‘How much more evidence do we need’? Planet breaks four climate records in one year, WMO warns

May 18, 2022 by news.sky.com

Last year the world set "alarming" new records in four key tests of climate health, a United Nations body has warned. The tests were greenhouse gas concentrations, sea level rise, ocean heat and ocean acidification. António Guterres, the UN chief, described the latest World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report as a "dismal litany" of the ways humanity is disrupting the climate. What did the report find? To build a global picture of a changing climate, the WMO every year gauges climate change against key tests. Four of these set new records: Advertisement Ocean heat was record high, having risen particularly strongly in the the past two decades, and is reaching even deeper depths. Ocean acidification: Scientists are confident that the open ocean is now the most acidic it has ever been for 26,000 years. Global average sea levels reached a new record high in 2021, after increasing at more than double the previous rate, mainly due to … [Read more...] about ‘How much more evidence do we need’? May 16, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

A heavy sandstorm in Iraq closed schools and offices and sparked mass hospital admissions as thousands suffered with breathing difficulties. Today's extreme weather is the latest of what Iraqi officials say is an unprecedented number of sandstorms to blast the country in recent weeks. Authorities in Baghdad, including the Education Ministry, declared a day off for local government institutions, with the exception of health services. Hundreds of people across the capital and southern cities went to hospitals with breathing difficulties, medical officials said. Baghdad International Airport said in a statement it was closing its airspace and halting all flights until further notice because of low visibility. Inside Elon Musk’s secretive security including destroyed phones, bodyguard ‘fixer’ and private flights

May 10, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

ELON Musk employs security strategies only the wealthy could pull off, has a shadowy fixer in his entourage and indulges in private flights. The richest man in the world loves a cheeky joke but has a few rough edges. Sending signals In 2018, Musk got into a Twitter-scrap with a British diver named Vernon Unsworth that escalated to the court room. That summer, 12 children and one adult were trapped in a cave two-and-a-half miles below the surface in Northern Thailand - Musk volunteered the assistance of his Boring Company, which digs tunnels for infrastructure (in addition to making flamethrowers). Unsworth, who was part of the original rescue team, took a shot at Musk and called his rescue plan a "PR stunt". Musk reciprocated, but perhaps excessively - he called Unsworth "pedo guy" and a "child rapist" - a defamation lawsuit followed. Inside creepy AI that ‘brings dead back to life’ by animating old photos

April 25, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk

CHERIE Bergman's eyes welled up as she met her father's gaze for the first time since his tragic death eight years earlier. With one tap of her phone, the Florida Mum was able to see him blink and smile from behind the screen as if he were alive just yesterday. What really knocked Cherie, 25, back on her heels was that this wasn't a replay of an old video. This was something different. She had uploaded a photo of her late parent to MyHeritage, an app that offers the chance to "reawaken" the dead. Using artificial intelligence, it creates short videos that breathe life into the subjects of portraits years or even centuries old. Faces in images are merged over "driver" animations to make the person look as though they are nodding, smiling and more.
