Town in crisis: The tiny region where children as young as ELEVEN are addicted to the deadly drug ice
Children who are still in primary school are becoming addicted to ice in a small South Australian town. GameStop winners and losers: How small ‘Wolves of Reddit’ investors are now MILLIONAIRES on paper and ‘Roaring Kitty’ is up $31M – while hedge funds face $19B in losses
The staggering rally of shares in beleaguered video game retailer GameStop is minting new millionaires, and costing hedge funds billions of dollars - at least on paper. GameStop shares rose another 70 percent on Friday in a staggering rally driven by small investors on the online forum Reddit that has seen the stock surge 1,800 since the beginning of January. The army of small traders buying up the stock are vowing to hold on to their shares to force hedge funds that have bet against it to pay through the nose to cover their losses -- meaning that many of the new fortunes will be wiped out if and when the bubble bursts. But for now, Robinhood traders such as AJ Vanover, who makes about $35,000 a year selling auto parts in Missouri , are in the money. Vanover's Robinhood balance exceeds $1 million, according to screenshots he shared with CNN . Keith Gill, the YouTuber also known as 'Roaring Kitty' was one of the leaders in the GameStop insurgency, promoting the … [Read more...] about GameStop winners and losers: How small ‘Wolves of Reddit’ investors are now MILLIONAIRES on paper and ‘Roaring Kitty’ is up $31M – while hedge funds face $19B in losses
COVID-19: ‘I had my head down in shame’: A pandemic life in one of the UK’s poorest towns
It's a Friday evening on Oldham's Eldon Street Estate, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in town. A car pulls into the car park. Some women are chatting in one of the stairwells in the flats opposite and they suddenly stop to look at the car. A few other residents emerge from their flats and peer over the balcony to see what is going on. The driver of the car gets out and opens the boot. She pulls out a decorating table and starts to unpack, neatly arranging the contents as if she's setting up for a car boot sale. But this is no car boot sale. Advertisement Bread, bananas, apples, cakes. A few cartons of milk. Some bars of chocolate. Tins of beans. Pasta. Soup. She's laying them all out on the table. For the past few weeks, Kay Astley has come here to hand out free food because she says many of the households on this estate cannot afford to eat. More from Covid-19 COVID-19: 'We can't return to business as usual,' says Sir Keir Starmer … [Read more...] about COVID-19: ‘I had my head down in shame’: A pandemic life in one of the UK’s poorest towns
