Why are Spanish farmers protesting against low prices?
Farmers blocked roads with tractors in southwestern Spain on Tuesday in the latest series of mass protests over plummeting incomes in the country's agriculture sector. The protests are mainly organised in the Extremadura region near the Portuguese border. Trade unions demand political action to guarantee retail prices for fruit and vegetables that farmers can make a living from. These protests have been happening for at least a week in this region and elsewhere in Spain. Farmers are angry at the combination of high agricultural production costs and the low prices they receive for their produce. EU policy requirement creates an 'unfair' market - claim The price of production for a kilo of oranges is around €0,20 to €0,22, the general secretary of the Agricultural Association of Young Farmers in Valencia (AVA ASAJA) Juan Salvador Torres, told Euronews. Yet the same kilo of oranges only earns the farmer around €0,18 to €0,20 -- which means they're losing money. … [Read more...] about Why are Spanish farmers protesting against low prices?

Britain is fed up, bitter, and practically broke – and it’s all going to get worse
Welcome to gerontocratic Britain. Sir Paul McCartney, 80, was the star attraction at the once youthful but now desperately middle-aged Glastonbury. Sir Elton John, 75, filled Hyde Park last weekend . The state pension is shooting up, financed by a tax raid on the young. The latest Census revealed that we are plunging into a catastrophic baby bust . The young and not so young are demoralised, downcast and have gone on baby strike, and not merely because they paid the price for protecting their elders from Covid . As the number of 90-year olds reaches an all-time high, there are 264,650 fewer under-fours than a decade ago, a 7.6 per cent slump. How many schools will need to shut, replaced by care homes and retirement villages? The signs are unmissable: Britain is a society that is losing trust in the future, and is increasingly terrified of its present. The greying of everything, the dissipation of a defined youth culture, means that we are now peering into a precipice of … [Read more...] about Britain is fed up, bitter, and practically broke – and it’s all going to get worse
Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?
The British opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer has said there is no going back on Brexit, in a speech on Monday night. Instead, he offered a new slogan as part of a drive to ensure Britain thrives: "Make Brexit Work". "There are some who say 'we don’t need to make Brexit work — we need to reverse it'," the Labour leader told the Centre for European Reform (CER) . "I couldn’t disagree more." "Let me be very clear. Under Labour, Britain will not go back into the EU. We will not be joining the single market. We will not be joining a customs union." It represents a major policy shift for Starmer — who in the run-up to Brexit called for a deal to be put to a second referendum, and lauded the benefits of the free movement of workers, now consigned to the past. It also further distances the country's current direction from the fiery debates and deadlock in the aftermath of the 2016 referendum, with the two largest parties firmly wedded to the UK's departure from the … [Read more...] about Brexit damage: Is EU exit now hitting UK’s economy harder than COVID?
