Kenneth Branagh is spitting image of Boris Johnson as he takes on Prime Minister role in new Sky drama
Sir Kenneth Branagh has completely transformed into Boris Johnson for his new role – and the photos from set prove that you can barely tell them apart. The thespian actor, 60, bore an absolutely uncanny likeness to the Prime Minister as he strolled through set with his head down, and a mop of blonde hair on his head. Thanks to prosthetics and make-up, Branagh was remarkably spot on with everything, even Johnson’s forward leaning walk. His new stolen look is all part of new drama This Sceptred Isle , which is currently filming in Worcestershire, recreating a real visit from Johnson back in March last year. The five-part series will track Johnson and the Government’s efforts during the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, and how he led the country through the uncertain times. This will include the efforts surrounding the NHS, the daily news briefings held to maintain updates, and the successes as well as the failings to contain the virus. This Sceptred … [Read more...] about Kenneth Branagh is spitting image of Boris Johnson as he takes on Prime Minister role in new Sky drama
Sweden and Finland could join NATO in next ‘couple of months’, US ambassador to alliance tells Sky News
The US ambassador to NATO has said the military alliance is trying to expedite the process to ensure that Sweden and Finland join in the next "couple of months". Speaking to Sky News' political editor Beth Rigby, Julianne Smith said in recent weeks NATO members have "come together to try and look at ways that they can reduce the timelines surrounding the process" which would see the two countries admitted to the military alliance. Ms Smith said the process has previously taken "upwards of a year", but added that "all allies are in agreement that this process needs to be expedited". "Ideally, I think we'd like to see it done in a couple of months. That's the goal," she told Sky News' Beth Rigby Interviews programme . Finland and Sweden have formally submitted their applications to join NATO in a "historic moment" driven by security concerns over Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Martin Reynolds is increasingly likely to take up the Riyadh position after leaving his role as one of Number 10's most senior officials in February. Kenneth Branagh remarkably uncanny as Boris Johnson in first look trailer for Covid drama This England
The first trailer has been released for Sir Kenneth Branagh ’s upcoming drama about Boris Johnson ’s leadership during the outbreak of the pandemic, and his impersonation is striking to say the least. Two years after the start of the pandemic, many of us would prefer not to watch a series that will remind us of a time when we had to lock down indoors, keep our distance from loved ones and only head outside for a law-abiding stretch of exercise. However, the new teaser for This England (previously titled This Sceptred Isle) might change some people’s minds, as Sir Kenneth completely disappears as he takes on the role of portraying the Prime Minister. In the first footage released for the show – which also stars Ophelia Lovebond as the politician’s wife Carrie Johnson and Andrew Buchan as former health secretary Matt Hancock – the camera takes viewers for a behind-the-scenes look at the inside of No 10 Downing Street. ‘A new dawn is breaking,’ a voiceover … [Read more...] about Kenneth Branagh remarkably uncanny as Boris Johnson in first look trailer for Covid drama This England

Russian invasion: Longest battle draws to a close in Mariupol as Ukrainian troops leave steel plant
The long battle in Ukraine’s Mariupol appears to be coming to a close amid efforts to rescue the last of the troops inside the Azovstal steel plant. Hundreds of Ukrainian fighters had held out in the steel plant for months under relentless bombardment in the last bastion of resistance in the devastated city. The capture of Mariupol would make it the biggest city to be taken by Moscow's forces yet and would give the Kremlin a badly needed victory, though the landscape has largely been reduced to rubble. More than 260 fighters – some of them seriously wounded and taken out on stretchers – left the ruins of the Azovstal plant on Monday and turned themselves over to the Russian side in a deal reached by the two warring parties. Ukrainian authorities said they were working to extract the remaining soldiers from the sprawling steel mill, though how many were still there was unclear. US Congress dives into UFOs, but still no signs of extraterrestrial life
The United States Congress held its first hearing in half a century Tuesday (local time) on unidentified flying objects. And no, there is still no government confirmation of extraterrestrial life. Testifying before a House Intelligence subcommittee, Pentagon officials did not disclose additional information from their ongoing investigation of hundreds of unexplained sightings in the sky. But they said they had picked a director for a new task force to co-ordinate data collection efforts on what the government has officially labelled “unidentified aerial phenomena”. Ronald Moultrie, the undersecretary of defence for intelligence, said the Pentagon was also trying to destigmatize the issue and encourage pilots and other military personnel to report anything unusual they see. “We want to know what's out there as much as you want to know what's out there,” Moultrie told politicians, adding that he was a fan of science fiction himself. These moves are not about scrapping the Protocol, but making it work
Peace and stability in Northern Ireland have been hard-won. The Belfast Good Friday Agreement is the bedrock on which the modern, thriving, Northern Ireland is built, marking the triumph of compromise and tolerance after decades of instability. I remember growing up in Leeds during the Eighties and Nineties, a time when our school was one of many to face bomb scares. I remember the heart-breaking attacks on civilians in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which happened all too often. The transformation since then triggered by the Belfast Good Friday Agreement has been a marvel. Today, Northern Ireland plays a critical role in our response to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine . The Ukrainian people are using our NLAW missiles , assembled in Belfast, to halt the advance of Russian tanks. They are defending their skies with Belfast-built Starstreak missiles . People in Northern Ireland have shown their immense generosity by opening up their homes to those fleeing the … [Read more...] about These moves are not about scrapping the Protocol, but making it work

The Labour leader said "one minute they are ruling it in, the next they are ruling it out" as he urged the Prime Minister to back the levy. Sir Keir also predicted that the Government will eventually be forced into rolling out the policy as he said "every single day he [Mr Johnson] delays his inevitable U-turn - he is going to do it - he is choosing to let people struggle when they don't need to".
