DOCTORS have reported a shock discovery in an infetile woman who had an abortion 20 years prior. The 39-year-old from Wales had been struggling to get pregnant for at least two years, and also had pelvic pain. She was described as “fit and healthy”, so experts at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, Bangor, investigated further. The unnamed woman had previously been thought to have irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS ), based on her sporadic pains, and given medication. MRIs found abnormalities in the tissue of her uterus, including cysts. But the woman was ovulating, suggesting she was fertile. She was referred to an infertility clinic where options such as IVF would have been considered, the paper in Clinical Case Reports said. More info The British Royal Family, like those in the rest of Europe, has endured for so long thanks to numerous political allegiances. Many of these required royals to intermarry, for some whether they liked it or not. But the limited crop of royals in Europe meant a series of marriages were of a taboo origin. Trending What is the Habsburg jaw? One of the more distinctive royal families in Europe was the Habsburg family. The German-Austrian dynasty stretched through three centuries, from the 11th to the 13th, and its members ruled large swathes of the country, from Portugal to Transylvania. What’s Better in Britain
This September marks my fifth year of living in Britain, a milestone that comes with its own special reward: a test. Specifically, the “ Life in the U.K. Test ,” an examination that anyone seeking to obtain permanent residency rights in the country and ultimately British citizenship must take. The test covers all sorts of questions on Britain’s history—including such seeming trivia as the specific ways Henry VIII got rid of each of his six wives—its laws, its values, and its traditions. “Comedy and satire, the ability to laugh at ourselves, are an important part of the U.K. character,” reads one passage from the official study handbook. In another, pubs are described as “an important part of U.K. social culture.” Self-deprecating humor and pub culture are just some of the survival skills you naturally pick up if you live here long enough. But as I prepare for this exam, I can’t help but think about all the practical things about British life that the test-prep materials leave … [Read more...] about What’s Better in Britain
‘It’s not a curse,’ Pakistani breast cancer survivor says
By Sophia Seth Published 5 May Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A Pakistani woman who had breast cancer said she found some in her community blamed her for having the disease. When Nagina Kaleem, from Southampton, was diagnosed nine years ago, she had friends who advised her to "go and repent", she told the BBC. Now recovered, she wants to raise awareness and educate others with south Asian backgrounds. "It's a disease not a curse, don't feel embarrassed, this is not punishment from your past life," she said. "They don't think of it as a disease, they think that this is a result of a person's sins or punishment from God, or sometimes they think that this person is cursed. "Some friends just said I should go and repent. One of my friends just stopped talking with me." Ms Kaleem said although not everyone in the south Asian community reacted in this way, … [Read more...] about ‘It’s not a curse,’ Pakistani breast cancer survivor says
Being fat can work to your advantage if you’re a gamer, study finds
Being fat is actually an advantage when it comes to competing in video game tournaments, according to a new study. Obese people are more prone to impulsive behaviour - such as eating - and the trait boosts performance in esports , say scientists. And gorging on calorie-loaded biscuits and cakes and guzzling fizzy drinks is also good as the energy lift provides an edge over rivals during marathon competitions. The surprising finding has implications for larger people in the office, say scientists and bosses should consider them for computer-based activities . Lead author Dr Petr Parshakova said: "Employers have too little understanding of how to select employees for particular tasks. "We tried to answer the question: Does BMI affect the results of computer skills? This is the first such analysis ever conducted." The findings are based on CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) - a shooter game played by more than a million around the world. The BMI (body mass index) … [Read more...] about Being fat can work to your advantage if you’re a gamer, study finds

Chris Pincher suspension: Boris Johnson unaware of specific claims – minister
By Dulcie Lee Published 17 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Boris Johnson was not aware of "specific allegations" against Chris Pincher when he was promoted to deputy chief whip, a Cabinet minister says. Mr Pincher was suspended as a Conservative Party MP earlier this week over allegations he had groped two men. He now faces six new claims of inappropriate behaviour stretching back several years, which he has denied. Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey defended the PM, saying he took "decisive action" to suspend the MP. Ms Coffey told the BBC that "to the best of my knowledge" Mr Johnson was not aware of specific allegations about Mr Pincher, saying she had not spoken to the prime minister directly and had received the assurance from the No 10 press office. Earlier, she told Sky News Mr Pincher's appointment in February had gone through a … [Read more...] about Chris Pincher suspension: Boris Johnson unaware of specific claims – minister
Go Knock on Doors
B arring extreme developments , there will be no Voting Rights Act of 2022. As a result, in Arizona , Georgia , and many states in between , it will be more difficult to register to vote, more difficult to vote by mail, and more difficult to vote in person in the fall midterm elections than it was in 2020. Democrats and progressives must immediately figure out how to build winning political campaigns in swing states where election laws may suppress turnout, especially among the poor and people of color. We can begin by mounting a robust, coordinated field campaign. I’m not talking about the usual efforts of slogans and yard signs, but tens of thousands of paid canvassers employed full-time by Democratic groups, people who will pound the pavement for eight hours a day in every swing state, training with veteran organizers as they go. To my knowledge, this kind of ground campaign—at that kind of scale—doesn’t exist today. The last time it did was back in 1964, when young … [Read more...] about Go Knock on Doors
MPs call for UK ban on two Chinese CCTV firms
By Chris Vallance Published 11 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A group of 67 MPs and Lords have called on the government to ban the sale and use of Hikvision and Dahua surveillance equipment in the UK. Supporters range across the parties and include Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey and four ex-Conservative ministers. Reports have linked the two companies with human rights violations in China. The BBC asked both firms for comment. Hikvision accused anti-CCTV "fringe groups" of "demonising" the company. Recent research by campaign group Big Brother Watch suggests that many public bodies across the UK use CCTV cameras made by the firms. This includes 73% of UK councils, 57% of secondary schools in England, and six out of 10 NHS trusts, as well as UK universities and police forces. A number of government departments, including the Home Office and … [Read more...] about MPs call for UK ban on two Chinese CCTV firms
