RENOVATING a home should be a relatively simple process, but sometimes there's legislation dictating what you can and can't do. It is important when buying a house to find out what year it was built and if there is likely to be anything that would hamper your revamp. How old is my house? Having an older house can mean there are restrictions on what renovations you can carry out on the property. For example, if your house is particularly old or in an area of outstanding natural beauty you might not be able to add an extension. An old house generally refers to one over 50 years old. Older than that and it could classed as a period property. Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet
Rishi Sunak has quit as Chancellor and Sajid Javid has resigned as health secretary as Boris Johnson's leadership faced a fresh crisis following the Chris Pincher scandal. Mr Sunak said "the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", adding "I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning." In an incendiary letter, Mr Javid said the British people "expect integrity from their government" but voters now believed Mr Johnson's administration was neither competent nor "acting in the national interest". Mr Johnson had tonight admitted "it was a mistake" to give Mr Pincher his job as deputy chief whip and said: "I apologise for it". Mr Sunak and Mr Javid's resignations come after Downing Street was accused of lying over the Chris Pincher scandal this morning, as Lord McDonald said Mr Johnson was briefed "in person" about concerns relating to the then Foreign Office minister. The publication of the … [Read more...] about Tuesday evening UK news briefing: Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid resign from the Cabinet
Wimbledon hero Cameron Norrie does not support England when it comes to rugby union
Cameron Norrie might have had the backing of the Court no.1 crowd during his gruelling five-set victory over David Goffin, but the Wimbledon hero will not be cheering on his fellow Brits in the Rugby Union World Cup next autumn. The British no.1, 26, reached the semi-finals of a grand slam for the first time in his career after twice battling back from a set down to claim an astonishing 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over world no.58 Goffin. In a mammoth contest on Court no.1, Norrie became the first Brit to reach the last four since a certain Andy Murray in 2016 and will face six-time SW19 winner Novak Djokovic on Friday (July 7) for a place in the final. READ MORE: "Ridiculous" Wimbledon rule forced female stars to play braless - giving fans an eyeful And while Norrie urged the crowd to show their support for his centre-court clash against the world no.3, "I'm sure the fans will get behind me and I'll take the fight to him [Djokovic]," he said, following his … [Read more...] about Wimbledon hero Cameron Norrie does not support England when it comes to rugby union
All this, and free sweets too
S trings of ordinary lightbulbs on white plastic flex, hung like flowers on dangling vines and festooned from the ceiling, in celebration of nothing at all. A low and vacant plinth, waiting for something to happen, with more lightbulbs glowing around its edge, a tawdry halo of expectancy. A lone and distant bird in a high white sky, a huge distance caught in the camera's eye. Blue curtains sifting blue light on to a blue mirror, veiling the world outside and spilling over the silver cellophane wrappers of thousands of sweets. Walk through a blue and white bead curtain, and think for a moment that it could almost be rain (it is called Water). This is the work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, currently at the Serpentine and on billboards around London (a single unexplained image - two dented pillows side by side, rumpled sheets, the aftermath of sleep or sex). There are more works, discretely displayed in the Print Room at the V&A, and in the studios of the Royal College of Art across … [Read more...] about All this, and free sweets too

What’s causing Sydney’s monster floods and how can they be stopped?
Dale Dominey-Howes is an Honorary Professor of Hazards and Disaster Risk Sciences at the University of Sydney ANALYSIS: Again, thousands of residents in western Sydney face a life-threatening flood disaster . At the time of writing, evacuation orders spanned southwest and northwest Sydney and residents of the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley were being warned the crisis was escalating. It’s just over a year since the region’s long-suffering residents lived through one of the largest flood events in recent history. And of course, earlier this year floods devastated the northern NSW town of Lismore. Right now, attention is rightly focused on helping those immediately affected by the disaster. But as the floodwaters subside, we must urgently act to avert a repeat of this crisis. Obviously, nature is a major culprit here. But there’s plenty humans can do to plan for major flooding and make sure we’re not sitting in the path of disaster. NINE Residents … [Read more...] about What’s causing Sydney’s monster floods and how can they be stopped?
Two-bed house in Scotland is on sale for £15,000 – but it’s missing a roof
For those of us trying desperately to get on the property ladder, a £15k house sounds pretty appealing. And it’s true – this two-bedroom house in Barr, Ayrshire, Scotland, does have bags of potential, as a detached home with its own driveway and garage, plus an enclosed courtyard. There’s just one – pretty major – problem: the property is missing a roof. Although perhaps you could spin that as a natural skylight? The house has a massive hole in the roof thanks to a fire, which has also left damage to the interiors. Some rafters remain, but they’re a tad charred, the windows are smashed, and there’s debris strewn across the drive. Oh, and potential buyers can’t have a peek inside due to safety issues. All that goes quite a way to explain the budget-friendly price tag. The house is being sold at auction by Slater Hogg and Howison, with starting bids at £13,500 and a £15,000 reserve. The listing reads: ‘Well located in the centre of the picturesque conservation … [Read more...] about Two-bed house in Scotland is on sale for £15,000 – but it’s missing a roof
