What a class act Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society have treated us to with Sister Act . It’s not everyday you get to see a performing convent of nuns Cromer-style dressed in wimples and habits belting out Sister Act’s 70s style musical theatre numbers at the end of its pier, and this coastal cast certainly gave Whoopi Goldberg’s film version a run for its money. Sister Act revolves around Deloris - a sassy disco queen played by the brilliant and ballsy Claire Chandler - who hides with the sisters after witnessing her gangster boyfriend commit murder. And now we can give you a sneak peak of the stage version of Sister Act, which premiers at Cromer Pier’s Pavilion Theatre tonight (Saturday, May 26). The cast, including Claire Chandler as disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, have been in the final stages of rehearsals for the show, which runs until Saturday, June 2. Picture: STEVEN BURBIDGE Steven Burbidge It was one of the classic feel-good films of the 1990s, and now Sister Act is about to make a splash in north Norfolk. The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society are putting the final touches on their wimples and getting their voices into gear for a stage version of the musical, which will be at Cromer Pier from Saturday, May 26 to June 2. Martin Rodwell, the show’s director, who joined the society in 1980 at the tender age of 13, said: “I love this show, everything about it is exactly how musicals should be, toe tapping, big laughs, big ballads and a finale with the best feel good factor, so enjoy the show and spread the gospel to the masses to come see Sister Act.” The show stars Claire Chandler as Deloris, the role made famous by Whoopi Goldburg in the original film.
