Loose Women panel savaged as stars grill Sir Keir Starmer over beergate: ‘What a car crash’
Loose Women viewers have blasted Monday’s interview with Sir Keir Starmer after he joked he was warned about appearing on the show. The Labour leader joined Ruth Langsford, Linda Robson, Brenda Edwards and Jane Moore on Monday’s episode to help the ITV daytime show launch Arthritis Care Awareness Week, and he laughed as the hosts asked if he was nervous. He quipped: ‘I’ve been told by everyone this morning – you must be very brave!’ Although he was on to discuss arthritis and his late mum’s lifelong battle with Still’s disease – a rare form of arthritis which can destroy the joints – the panel started by grilling Sir Keir on beergate after he vowed to resign if fined for sharing a takeaway with activists at a time when indoor mixing was banned, aside from at work. The Labour leader repeated his stance that he would step down if fined, but he again insisted: ‘I haven’t broken the rules and I’m sure that’s gonna be the finding.’ Viewers accused the Loose Women … [Read more...] about Loose Women panel savaged as stars grill Sir Keir Starmer over beergate: ‘What a car crash’

Elliot Bovill, 31, is alleged to have attacked the 68-year-old politician during a Tory party conference on October 4 last year in Manchester . Sir Iain was followed by protestors after leaving his hotel with wife Betsy and a friend, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard. Outlining the allegation, prosecutor Sudara Weerasena said: ‘Mr Bovill approaches Sir Iain Duncan Smith and he has a traffic cone, which he places on Sir Iain Duncan Smith’s head and then he runs off’. He faces a two-day trial alongside Radical Haslam, 28, from Manchester, and Ruth Wood, 50, from Cambridge, who both denied using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause Sir Iain harassment, alarm or distress. Andrew Bailey faces scrutiny as Bank of England accused of being ‘slow off the mark’ on inflation
The Bank of England has been “slow off the mark” raising interest rates to combat inflation, a former minister has said, raising pressure on Andrew Bailey to get a grip on the cost-of-living crisis . Mel Stride, chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, said the Bank failed to spot the emerging “wage-price spiral”, heightening the risk that the Monetary Policy Committee will have to raise interest rates more rapidly to cool the economy. Echoing comments he made to the Telegraph last week , Mr Stride told BBC Radio 4: “The area where you can criticise the Bank, and we will be pressing the Governor hard this afternoon, is what has been happening in the labour market, which has become very overheated, and I think we are not in the foothills of a wage-price spiral, with wages chasing higher prices, leading to higher wages in turn. “There, I think, the Bank of England, the MPC, has been rather slow off the mark, and I think that is going to lead to a requirement for a more … [Read more...] about Andrew Bailey faces scrutiny as Bank of England accused of being ‘slow off the mark’ on inflation

DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Show us you’re a low tax Chancellor, Rishi
When the Left can taunt the Tories for being the party of high tax we really are through Alice’s looking glass. Rishi Sunak insists he is toiling to help families who are being crushed by the rocketing cost of living . But instead of turning to time-tested Tory solutions and leaving more money in people’s pockets, the Chancellor is bewilderingly doing the precise opposite. Not only has he raised the tax burden to an eye-watering 70-year high – but as an analysis for the Daily Mail shows today, he is seizing £7.5billion by stealth through rocketing prices and tax bracket freezes. Rishi Sunak insists he is toiling to help families who are being crushed by the rocketing cost of living It’s a punitive regime which has prioritised picking the nation’s pockets over giving it a boost as we emerge from the crippling pandemic. And it represents another assault on the middle classes – and indeed anyone who aspires to work hard, earn more and plan for their future.
