Author Sir Salman Rushdie, who has faced death threats for his novel The Satanic Verses, has been stabbed "up to 15 times", including in the neck, while on stage at an event in New York state. The Indian-born British author has been airlifted to hospital but his condition is not yet known. His agent said he is undergoing surgery. Golden moment cast in bronze: Sir John Walker statue unveiled in south Auckland
One of the country's sporting heroes has been immortalised in his home town. Olympic athlete Sir John Walker unveiled a life-sized bronze statue in Manurewa, south Auckland, on Saturday afternoon. The statue, designed by sculptor Joanne Sullivan, depicts the moment Walker crossed the finish line at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where he won gold in the 1500 metres. It faces his old primary, Manurewa Central School.
