For nearly two decades, women in Afghanistan have played an active part in social and political life by holding political office, working in professions and running businesses. Advances for women have extended from the country's elite in the cities all the way to the less-privileged communities in the provinces. However, Afghan women now fear their place in society will again be marginalized as the Islamist militant Taliban consolidate their power under a peace deal with the US. Derek Chauvin trial: Prosecutors seek to add third-degree murder charge in George Floyd killing as BLM protests rage
GEORGE Floyd protesters took to the streets of Minneapolis as the jury selection for cop Derek Chauvin's trial started today. As Chauvin was sat in the court house , protesters holding signs were turning up outside of the Hennepin County Government Center. The jury selection was postponed and will not take place today due to discussions taking place regarding the charge being reinstated. Chauvin's attorney, Eric Nelson, said on Monday that he is going to ask the state Supreme Court to review the decision regarding third-degree murder. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. Layers of fencing were erected outside of the courthouse prior to the trial, with a sign attached to it telling protesters 'you are welcome here' while nothing it is a 'restricted' area. The billionaire ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has married a science teacher. MacKenzie Scott, who is the 22nd richest person in the world, has tied the knot with Seattle teacher Dan Jewett. The marriage was mentioned in a letter to The Giving Pledge, an organisation which encourages ultra-rich people to give away their billions. "Dan is such a great guy, and I am happy and excited for the both of them," Bezos said in a statement. Jewett said he would be signing on to Scott's commitment to give away most of her wealth. Since Scott, 50, split from the Amazon founder after 25 years of marriage in 2019 and became worth $53billion (£38billion) according to Forbes, she has set about donating.
